Overview:

Justice and I talked the latest on the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado Springs as well as how people can get involved — and how not to help. I suggested several organizations, including The Clinic Vest Project where I am a founding board member, and reminded people not to just show up in front of a clinic to counter protest or escort without contacting the clinic.

I got a little choked up talking about what abortion providers go through. Dr. Willie Parker, one of the most public, vocal providers, is asking people not to be silent. It is the least we can do considering he and other providers risk arson, stalking, assault, and even death to make sure we have health care. Please read and post his op-ed and the interview with Dr. Chastine included below.

Organizations to support:

Donate & contact to volunteer: The Clinic Vest Project

Donate & find your local fund to volunteer: The National Network of Abortion Funds

Donate & follow to support independent abortion providers: The Abortion Care Network

Overview:

I was on with Justice to talk about the Whole Women’s Health suit landing in front of the Supreme Court and how a new study out of Texas on people attempting to self-induce their own abortions ties into the importance of the upcoming SCOTUS decision. Reminder: the June decision on HB2 will either strengthen Roe, uphold it, or decimate it — which will affect the entire country. If the primary reason people self-induce is that they couldn’t access wanted/preferred clinic-based care, imagine what would happen with even fewer clinics should SCOTUS uphold the law.

Note: I'm a writer and radio host full time, providing much of my content for free. If you can, consider supporting my work by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

I was on to catch Hal’s listeners up with the latest on the Whole Woman’s Health case out of Texas, fighting the omnibus anti-abortion law HB2. This is the law Wendy Davis and the “unruly mob” successfully filibustered in 2013 — only to see Gov. Perry call another special session to pass it. The Supreme Court has decided to hear the case and I have the update, the timeline, and what’s at stake for the country.

Overview:

I was on with Hal to talk about the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado Springs. WCPT was having technical difficulties, so Hal couldn’t hear me — which makes for a couple gaps in the segment. But my recorder works and hopefully you’ll still find the segment valuable. Hal has a tendency to unnecessarily include “mentally ill” in the categories of people who shouldn’t have access to guns as though we’re likely to be perpetrators, but the content of the back and forth is overall focused on rhetoric in politics and media that promote and excuse extremist, violent behavior like this against reproductive healthcare providers.

Overview:

We covered a fair amount today! We talked disappointing midterm results — as per usual as the right-wing turns people out and gears up their fear machine with well-funded precision. I also gave some much-deserved love to Margaret Cho who tweeted about her past as a sex worker and why she is the literal opposite of ashamed about it. Then I tied sex worker rights to abortion rights — a very short leap and both are fundamentally about bodily autonomy and economic justice/independence.

The GOP honestly doesn’t understand how Medicaid — a health insurance program — works. YET ANOTHER STATE is trying to weasel out of reimbursing Planned Parenthood for services rendered. All you need is the title. I have no idea how we crammed so much into just over 20 minutes, but we touched on the Oregon shooting and Governor Bobby Jindal’s ill-advised blog rant; the report out of Texas that says HB2 is having exactly the affect on patients seeking abortion we knew it would and know it does; Planned Parenthood plans to collect on an outstanding bill from the state of Arkansas; and Justice has an ingenious idea about gun control.

Overview:

Such a pleasure to be on with Sam Sacks and Sam Knight — two of those people I know from around the interwebs, but don’t get the chance to chat with all that often. They both do really important work that parallels mine without often intersecting it directly; you should follow what they’re up to starting with this spot.

We chatted about the sham hearing on Planned Parenthood’s funding, activism in reproductive rights and justice, and how anyone can get involved in the culture change of reducing abortion stigma as easily being supportive (or at the very least nonjudgemental) on their social media feeds.

Overview:

First, I continue to ask, if defunding or ending Planned Parenthood (or trying to) is so vital: Why is it only important to the GOP when the budget is due in like five seconds?

Hal and I discussed the debate — both the theater and the talking points the eventual candidate will be unable to run from in the general election; not every debate is going to be “moderated” by Jake Tapper. I play Politifact and explain why the GOP can’t actually defund Planned Parenthood the way they’re portraying; yes, people would lose access, but no, they can’t strip all the funding because that’s not how it works.

I also make Carly Fiorina’s lies about the CMP videos even worse: they preyed on a grieving family by stealing footage of an intensely sad moment to portray something that doesn’t actually happen, but is a necessity in their talking points to end abortion care.

Louisiana is the state Hal was referencing that Planned Parenthood is suing to restore funding. That kind of fight is expensive; PP shouldn’t have to do that and patients shouldn’t have to wonder if the clinics will be open and their healthcare will be available when they go for an appointment.

Overview:

Today Justice and I dug into the rift sex work causes in "Capital F” Feminism and why being an out ally as someone who has never been a sex worker is so important. We also talked about the immigrant in Texas who was reported by staff at her doctor’s office and arrested when she went for her annual exam. And then I gave an update on anti-choice violence with a report on the Washington Planned Parenthood rebuilding after arson — despite it not be a location that provides abortions. Overview:

Justice started us off with some really good news on the anti-abortion violence front: Angel Dillard is set to stand trial for threatening a doctor who had planned to become an abortion provider. The case was originally dismissed as “free speech” under the “wish/should/like” clause that is more famous for letting internet harassers off the hook. “Someone should X/Y/Z you” is often not seen as a threat because there is no active verb, i.e. “I will X/Y/Z.” Dillard’s “warning" style rather than committal language declaring she would commit the act described had gotten her off — but no longer. Having this vague threat now taken seriously in a state with so many anti-abortion legislators and law enforcement is a very positive shift.

Then we spent some time on my article for Rolling Stone on the Planned Parenthood attacks and the latest with #StandWithPP.

And before signing off, I dropped a tease: an announcement coming in the next Feminist Round-up….

In brief: I can’t tell you how great it was to be on Dave’s show. I’m a lifelong sports fan and have listened uncountable hours of sports radio; I won’t even pretend I wasn’t jumping-up-and-down excited to be on Edge of Sports Radio.

Overview:

This was definitely some of the most fun I’ve had on air, serious topic aside; I can’t imagine anyone I’d rather talk about the intersection of sports and culture with. Dave is great and everyone should read and listen to all his things. I’m still blushing from the generous compliments at the end of the segment.

We touched on Chicago sports culture, fan culture, and how to deal with the love of a team when a player is accused of something horrific. I gave some high praise to Chicago sports media who have largely gone out of their way to cover Kane’s accusations thoroughly with information on the reality of reporting rape in this country while avoiding any hint of victim blaming. And we hopefully consider that public outcry from fans could lead to teams/leagues handling of accusations and indictments better.

Note: I'm a writer and radio host full time, providing much of my content for free. If you can, consider supporting my work by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

Hal had me on to do a little celebration of my new show — something that wouldn’t be happening without him. He contends that he totally knew what he was doing putting me on air the first time (or few times); whether he did or not, I’m definitely grateful. I wouldn’t have considered broadcasting — let alone fallen in love with it — if he hadn’t decided my voice was valuable four years ago.

When I jumped in for hour two, Hal was mid-Trump Fest. He was playing roulette with Trump’s recent stump speech broadcast on C-Span, just hitting play at random places. It was everything you’d expect it to be and more. We also heard from one of Hal’s awesome regular callers who blames Palin — and therefore McCain — for the quality of the 2016 GOP candidates. I definitely see his point.

It’s always good to be on with Matt who, if you haven’t been around since before the beginning of my restarted writing career, was the first to put me on air to discuss something I wrote. He didn’t care that I didn’t bring a platform of thousands of listeners, readers, or followers; he simply felt my penned-in-frustration-and-honesty abortion story was worth giving airtime to.

In this interview we covered a lot of ground. I talked about the Planned Parenthood videos in broad terms and transitioned to the supposed (unsubstantiated) hacks on their provider information. We put it in the context of anti-abortion targeting and violence, which is what makes even just the claim of stolen personal information an act of domestic terrorism.

We also gave Mike Huckabee and his faux-Constitutional basis for bringing in the FBI to shut down abortion clinics. And then we talked about the GOP’s long-term wish to cut food assistance — you know, because of their commitment to life.

Overview:

I don’t get the chance to talk sports that often (one of the reasons I miss doing AriseTV’s Friday round table) these days, so I jumped at the chance to chat with Justice on my “off” week from the Netroots After Show. We discussed the Jen Welter hire at the Arizona Cardinals and how she’s initially being received around the league as well as Boston activists defeating the costly Olympic bid.

In brief: I got the chance to chat briefly with the ladies from Talk Poverty on radio row at Netroots Nation about why, a couple days into the biggest progressive conference in the country, none of us had heard much about poverty.

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

I sat with the Talk Poverty hosts for a few minutes at Netroots Nation last month to discuss my just published Rolling Stone piece about food assistance and how food/economic justice seemed largely absent from a conference where the conditions of 45 million poor Americans should be at the forefront.

There is no simple or short answer beyond the compartmentalization of “the left” and how much privilege pervades any space with organizers and journalists colliding with the complicated nature of an epidemic that tacitly approves of between 9-15% of the population at any given time being hungry or on the verge of it. What can we do? Listen to find out. (Spoiler: we have to talk about it.)

Today was another true round-up as Justice and I made our way around the country touching on WI Governor Scott Walker’s latest harmful legislation to prove his conservative cred, Netroots Nation 2015 — what was present and what was strikingly absent, and the launch of doctored videos to intimidate and discredit Planned Parenthood providers.

In brief: My chat with John & Molly about how centering marginalized communities brought about the biggest moment in reproductive justice in a generation.

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

It has definitely been too long since I’ve had the chance to chat with John and Molly; I can’t think of a better reason than the biggest moment in reproductive justice in a generation. We talk about the first proactive legislation in federal history, it’s mainstream support among voters of all demographics, and the way centering the voices and needs of marginalized groups is how this came about.

The unfortunately transexclusionary short-hand name — The EACH Woman Act — is tremendous legislation. It would end all insurance coverage bans in the U.S. including the perpetually reintroduced Hyde Amendment which is attached to the federal budget to prevent tax dollars from providing abortion care. (This is one of many reasons why the GOP’s endless effort to defund Planned Parenthood over abortion provision is ridiculous on its face.)

As per usual, the Knefels ask awesome questions, make great points, and foster thoughtful conversation. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed being on with them!

Overview:

I was really excited to get this request. TalkPoverty.org is a new project of the Center For American Progress and so many of their projects are doing outstanding work. From their “About Us” page:

TalkPoverty.org—a project of the Center for American Progress—is dedicated to demonstrating that we know how to dramatically reduce poverty. Here you will find basic data about poverty in America; hear from people living in poverty and people dedicated to the fight against poverty; and get involved with local, state and national organizations to take action.
TalkPoverty.org is a bridge between local and national voices, grassroots activism and policy work, and those who are struggling and those who are more economically secure. At TalkPoverty.org, discover a vibrant antipoverty community and your place in it.

We discussed my upcoming (and now published) piece for RH Reality Check on the way I’ve recentered my abortion story following a realization that I’ve lived my entire adult life at or near the poverty line. Obviously, that isn’t news to me; I was there when I as grocery shopping at the Dollar Store and spending 80+ hours a week working since I was 22, but I had always told my abortion story with the intention of calling out our health “care” system which allowed my insurance provider to refuse coverage of my birth control.

Overview:

Today we celebrate with an eye to the future. I talk about what the eventual outcomes of the Supreme Court taking up the HB2 case could be for Texas as well as the face of abortion access across the country.

Justice reads some tea leaves in other Supreme Court decisions — including the quote that is the graphic for this post/podcast. We connect the other decisions like the one upholding the Arizona unbiased redistricting to the HB2 stay and possible full definition of “undue burden.”

Overview:

In a departure from our recent stretch of optimism, Justice and I talked about the Fifth Circuit decision that will likely close all but 8-10 reproductive healthcare clinics in Texas. I broke down how this could affect the rest of the country and Justice brought up the important point that these closures eliminate more than abortion access from communities.

We also did a call to action for people to support the abortion funds on the ground in Texas before shifting to a brief mocking of Governor Rick Scott (FL) who wants his state to become the 14th requiring patients make two separate trips to a clinic before being allowed to terminate a pregnancy.

UPDATE: June 19th, the Fifth Circuit refused to stay their decision; The Center For Reproductive Rights is appealing to the Supreme Court to stay the decision before the clinics close on July 1.

Overview:

I’ll be honest: I’m having a hard time talking about this court decision. Watching as my friends prepare to reshutter their clinics has been rough emotionally. I couldn’t bring a ray of sunshine to this spot. In fact, I explain part of how this decision could negatively affect abortion access in the entire country depending on how SCOTUS handles the appeal.

If you want to help, you can support Fund Texas Choice, the abortion fund that helps Texans with travel logistics. They’re about to get even busier and the volunteers who answer the hotline are going to have to say no when their annual funds are depleted. Sending patients to New Mexico and helping them travel hundreds of miles in their own state is expensive and every dollar you give goes to someone in need.

Overview:

To be fair, the GOP never has asserted that they’re much into abiding by the rules they impose on other people. Or, really, even the basic rules we’ve all agreed to live by.

This week Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was indicted on charges that start with what amounts to tax evasion and are beginning to look like he was paying hush money to cover up sexual misconduct with a former student — a high school student. Hal and I did some extrapolation on this and how a culture that requires all sexual expression to be closeted leads to people seeking out power dynamics. What’s the best way to ensure no one knows about a sexual relationship of any kind? Have coercive power over the other person or persons.

And speaking of power, Scott Walker has thoughts on mandatory, unnecessary ultrasounds (yes, these bills would require them to be vaginal due to how far along the pregnancy would be): they're “just a cool thing" for women. Oh. I have thoughts of my own on this as well as Hillary’s hair color quip making national news.

Overview:

This story matters. Josh Duggar is not an anomaly.

The way people — including viable presidential candidates — are flocking to defend an admitted, serial child molester is the most quintessential example of patriarchy, purity culture, and distorted fundamentalist religiosity intermingling into a perfect storm I’ve ever seen or could possibly imagine. Currently, TLC is considering continuing the show — just minus Josh. So, they’ll still be including the parents who knew and covered it up to continue the money flow as well as the victims — Josh’s SISTERS — who, no doubt, wouldn’t be allowed to decide for themselves if they participated. Perfect.

Hal and I talk about purity culture a lot; here we break down all the elements we could get to in a 20 minutes segment. There’s really just way too much; I suggested my friend Dianna’s book (link below) and the pile of resource clips to get more of the story and analysis.

I took Michelle Duggar’s “used bicycle” analogy and the hypocritical mouthpiece jerkbag describing her in the clip Hal played personally. I’m “unethical” to these people because I have more than one romantic partner, but their celebrities and leaders prey on children and cheat on their wives while my partners all did, have, and will consent to being involved with a polyamorous person not looking for an anchor (spouse/live-in, etc) partner. (I wrote about it at The Frisky if you’re interested in more.) I know who I am, what I want, and I form long-lasting loving bonds with many people — friends, family-by-choice, and romantic partners. These people have no idea who they are, how to treat each other in an honest way, how to communicate what they need and MOST IMPORTANTLY how to give/ask for consent.

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

Today I brought good news! There’s a pro-active legislative push to regulate religiously founded/backed crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) — or fake reproductive health clinics. The bill getting a vote in the California assembly FRIDAY, the Reproductive FACT Act (AB 775) has a great chance of passing. Justice and I talk about why they’re important — beyond just that CPCs outnumber real health clinics two to one in this country.

We also covered the new Planned Parenthood (PPPSW) clinic in El Centro, CA and the outsider protests which included all-star anti-choicers Michelle Bachmann. Justice lead into my love of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice with a distinction about how faith/religion play into abortion opposition and “street theater” — his phrase for the clinic and city council picketers. If you don’t know the RCRC, get to know them.

And I couldn’t sign off without thanking Breitbart for my first ever mention because the headline was OUTSTANDING: “Planned Parenthood’s Abortion ’Storytelling’ Tactic Borrowed From Militant LGBT Activists.” Hell yes it is — probably because there are queer people in the reproductive justice movement, ya ignorant jerks. I gave a shout out to GetEQUAL, the baddest LGBTQ group in the country and valued personal friends. Which, I guess, means Breitbart got one part of the story right: I’m friends with the “militant gays."

Overview:

My latest for Truthout is some GOOD NEWS on reproductive rights! Amidst the 332 anti-abortion provisions floating through state legislatures the first quarter of this year are a slate of crisis pregnancy center (CPC) regulations. CPCs outnumber full-scale reproductive health clinics about 2-1 in this country (yes, even in liberal areas like CA), so preventing them from lying to clients and injuring them physical and emotionally changes the landscape of reproductive health.

In brief: My regular spot with Justice! We took the time to hammer patron saint of reasonable republicans Scott Walker on his extremist reproductive rights history and then previewed the GOP’s “fix” for their 20-week abortion ban from the first day of the session. Spoiler alert: it’s even more awful now. UPDATE: It passed the House.

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

Justice and I spent some time on Rep. Scott Walker’s record on conscience clauses because seeking to allow doctors to lie to patients to prevent abortions is an aspect of his legislative record that gets glossed over or ignored completely. Walker is seen as “reasonable” and a “middle of the road” guy focused on budget and labor. But his platform still includes draconian rights restrictions; they need to be well-known before the primaries aanoint him the VP.

Then we transitioned to today’s vote in Congress. It’s a “fixed” bill banning abortion federally after 20-weeks. Justice and I talked about the original “pain capable” bill, introduced the first day of the legislative session this years: "Netroots Radio After Show — #SOTU on ReproRights and #Roe Turns 42 — (01/21/15)”. The GOP women flipped out that there was no rape exception and this is the update — which still dishes out significant punishment for rape victims and ADDS punishment for incest victims with new "limits on incest-related abortion.”

I broke down the false “science,” we talked about the faux-religious motivation, and outlined the real financial and control motivations. Americans United For Life, it turns out, is essentially funded by the Koch brothers — in case you thought there was a distinction between “economic” and “social” conservatives.

In brief: My regular spot with Justice made the rounds from explaining why white feminists need to call out transphobia and racism, to updating the Purvi Patel case, to me yelling at racists/poverty shaming jerks on Twitter re: SNAP benefits being sold for manicures!

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

I did some insider baseball feminist stuff and explained why it’s important for White Feminism™ to join call-out culture and start policing “our own” for racist, transphobic, and other harmful writing. Meghan Murphy is hardly the only one with a history of this, but her blatant bigotry ought to be something we can all agree to discredit. Yet, it’s largely not happening. This feeds the stigma and bigotry that fuels violence against marginalized groups and it has to stop.

As usual, Justice had a great historical perspective as a white liberal who was born, raised, and lived a while in the Bay area. I always appreciate his willingness to weigh in while acknowledging his privilege and unique perspective as someone who was raised in such an inclusive area.

Purvi Patel is appealing her contradictory convictions of feticide and felony neglect of a dependent. We talked about the widespread criminalization of pregnancy outcomes in this country and how abortion/sexual stigma make it dangerous for some to find care and help when they need it.

And Justice let me yell at the idiots in my timeline who think the Baltimore kids going hungry yesterday when school was unnecessarily cancelled should starve as well as the people who think I could sell my EBT (SNAP) benefits for a manicure if I wanted to. That’s not how it works, folks.

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

Hal has some great callers; the clip opens with Carl (or Karl — sorry I don’t have the spelling) from Nashville continuing the discussion of why demographics vote or don’t vote for certain candidates on gender and race. I backed up the caller with some shade for white women who are our least reliable assumed progressive voting block. Women of color have been bailing us out for years; just look at the voting records ever time you hear “women delivered the election."

I have a slight panic attack when Hal insinuates that the GOP has been Ready For Hillary for eight years because they thought she was going to be the candidate in 2008. If anyone needs me, I’ll be hiding out until November 9, 2016.

We dug into Obama & Hillary Derangement Syndromes — Hal slams white male privilege by reminding them that they are “one symbolic demographic,” even if Wayne LaPierre wants to make them the default and other the rest of us.

And I nailed a caller who thinks “social issues” aren’t interconnected with economic justice. I can’t with the false dichotomy and with people who don’t understand that healthcare, equality, and access to education don’t affect people's economic capability.

Overview:

332 abortion restrictions in 43 states. Just in the first quarter of 2015. THREE-HUNDRED AND THIRTY-TWO IN FORTY-THREE STATES. I’m going to keep saying it until everyone gets that the all-out assault on bodily autonomy is happening to them. It’s time to get mad, y’all.

Hal is all in. It’s been gratifying watching him get more angry and righteous on this issue over the past few years. Today, in response to the attempted systematic elimination of trained abortion providers, he asked a question I can only nod in answer to:

"There's no way the people crafting [‪#‎abortion‬ restriction] bills don't know what will happen; are they just comfortable with a killing field of women?”

I talk about the forced malpractice of the “misinformed consent” laws and the ways anti-abortion legislators and activists are driving providers out of business with lawsuits, expensive litigation fighting unconstitutional laws, & harassing/targeting them incessantly.

We also gave it to Rand Paul who apparently doesn’t know about Ayn Rand’s pro-choice stance. And I showed some uncharacteristic love to Debbie Wasserman Schultz for her unapologetic, unflinching abortion stance.

In brief: Y’all need to get alarmed. Right now. The all-out assault on bodily autonomy is having a record year and it’s in your backyard.

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

This was one of those scheduled spots where the host and I hardly knew how to limit the scope of news and commentary. The long and the short of it is the all-out assault on bodily autonomy is happening where you are. I promise. 322 provisions in 43 states — just in the first quarter of 2015. This is a record-setting pace.

Justice and I talked about what the laws mean, why they get proposed, and how they affect doctors and patients. I put it in context with the new book on abortion provider targeting “Living in the Crosshairs” that I reviewed for RH Reality Check. The goal is to make abortion completely inaccessible by every means necessary and available.

We also touched on my piece for The Frisky where I climbed back up on the “Soapbox” to dismantle a rape apology, victim blaming bullshit article from Elle Magazine. The way we talk about consent matters and an outlet that massive saying it doesn’t is unconscionable.

In brief: My regular spot with Hal Sparks on WCPT Radio, Chicago!

Overview:

I always love when I get to tell Hal he’s even righter than he thought he was. His set up to the spot was on how elections matter all the way down the ticket to comptrollers. I added context through the Feminist Majority Foundation’s recent clinic targeting report and a book I’m reviewing on increasing violence against reproductive healthcare providers; as the anti-choice laws have been passed, violence has increased nationwide.

We moved on quickly, so for more of my set-up on increased targeting of abortion providers, see the round-up of writing and media I did during 40 Days For Life this year: #40DaysForLife Annual Targeting Round-up

The bill — SB 1318 — sitting on the Arizona governor’s desk is, in essence an insurance coverage ban. ACA plans already cannot cover abortion care, but residents may purchase an additional rider (think: the unfortunately named infamous “rape insurance” law from Michigan). This bill would prohibit private insurance companies from offering that, so basically it’s restricting the free market the GOP loooooooves so much to inhibit reproductive healthcare.

We talked about the provision getting the most attention: a junk “science” add-on masked as a “information” disclosure or “informed consent” cause. Hal paralleled these chip-away at access laws to the LGBTQ discrimination allowance “religious freedom” laws in 40% of our states (and the federal government). It’s a right-wing strategy and it’s working because it can play as reasonable.

I also got righteous about not doing a general boycott of a state. Follow the #WeAreIndiana hashtag & support the businesses that are LGBTQ-friendly rather than further injuring and stigmatizing an entire population. After a call from an Indiana resident, Hal nails why the discrimination against some individuals is hypocritical. You didn’t build that.

The annual national harassment season known as 40 Days For Life wraps up this weekend. As I type, there’s a prayer vigil going on at Speaker Boehner’s office because “pro-life” folks are angry that the 20-week abortion ban was dropped from the agenda temporarily during the opening days of the legislative session. That (I’m assuming) peaceful demonstration is in start contrast to the reality providers and patients live with every day in this country.

My latest piece for Truthout goes into the story of a Sacramento clinic to illustrate what the Feminist Majority Foundation’s latest clinic survey discovered: there is a significant spike in direct targeting over the past four years. It turns out “life” is negotiable to the “pro-life” movement.

In brief: Back on with my friend Matthew Filipowicz to talk my latest Truthout piece on the annual anti-choice harassment campaign and the Feminist Majority Foundation’s new report on provider targeting!

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

Always good to be on the Matthew Filipowicz Show! We covered a pretty heavy topic today without much of our signature ability to laugh and joke about the horrific. The FMF’s new clinic survey shows that targeting of abortion providers has spiked to levels that should be alarming everyone — but almost zero media is covering. Apparently we’re just supposed to risk our lives to provide or access basic healthcare in this country.

We talked about the numbers, the situation at the Sacramento clinic I describe in my Truthout piece, what providers go through and feel just attempting to do their jobs, and how we can make their work safer. The long-game answer is to reduce stigma around abortion care and build more clinics so that harassment is harder and less welcomed and tolerated by communities. That will require media calling it what it is: terrorism.

<p>Justice and I were a little short on our typical humor and sarcasm today discussing the history of the 40 Days for Life campaign, my targeting by the ProLife Action League last year, and this year’s actions on the heels of the Feminist Majority Foundation’s report. Almost 70% of clinics and more than half of individual abortion providers are regularly and directly targeted; if that’s news to you, it’s time to ask why the media and our legislators don’t seem to care.</p>

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

Hal and I were at our wonky best, discussing the possible outcomes and affects of King v. Burwell, the latest attempt to gut the Affordable Care Act. (I’ll excerpt Jessica Mason Pieklo’s RHRC piece in the full podcast notes.) The plaintiffs are relying on what amounts to a typo in the language — “established by the State” — that describes the subsidies to insurance exchanges. It’s unlikely that it’ll be entirely struck down, but could be “Voting Rights Act” - ified with the “typo” clause slashed and returned to this Congress for a fix — right as a national election is getting started.

I’m the poster child for the ACA, but I’m protected in one of the 14 states (California) that created its own exchange. As for residents of the other 36 states — my brother, an Illinois resident, included, they’ll have to wait until June to find out if their subsidies vanish. People like my brother — who had a kidney transplant in college — who can’t afford to shoulder the premium payments on their own or would have to go back to an employer-based, stuck-in-your-job system, would be the ones who suffer. The groups most affected? Say it with me: marginalized groups like people of color, LGBTQ people (who STILL have to fight for healthcare availability even with the ACA), low-income people (that’s me raising my hand), rural residents who would have to drive to sliding scale clinics. You know, the politically inconvenient folks.

We boiled the ACA down to two words that conservatives should love: individual choice. And Hal posits that Obamacare is filling a gap that used to be part of unions: providing some choice, mobility and stability toward the end of working years before qualifying for programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

In brief: In answer to Professor Brittney Cooper’s call for white feminists to step up and explain Patricia Arquette’s massive backstage fail, Justice and I discuss the reality of the pay gap. (…and a few other things)

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

It’s always a pleasure to be on with Justice! After the Oscar’s “Hooray!!” …. “oh wait….” from Patricia Arquette, a discussion on the reality of pay inequality was necessary. I stumbled through a definition of “intersectionality” and explained that if Arquette’s gaff was an anomaly most of us would have simply rolled our eyes. But this is how a big part of White Feminism rolls: call on women of color and queer people when it suits us and disregard their needs and voices when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient to address and amplify them. With the big audience for this example, intersectional feminists jumped on a chance to utilize the opportunity.

I quoted some friends, rattled off some statistics (most courtesy of my latest Best of the Left Podcast activism segment on #EqualPayDay), and emphasized that it is the job of intersectional white feminists to “collect our own” when this happens. The onus to continually explain the humanity of marginalized people and the way that language and erasure matter should not be on the oppressed groups. White women and professional white feminists as a group have more power and a bigger mic; dissecting the “101” of what’s wrong with Arquette’s comments is on those of us with the privilege to ignore it if we so chose.

It’s really heartening that SO MANY outlets — who could have just stopped at the acceptance speech and gushed over her equal pay reference — immediately jumped on the backstage add-on and had them published by noon the following day. A very unexpected B+ overall to progressive sites.

It was such a pleasure to be on air with a reproductive justice badass like Heidi Williamson! Host Kris Welch had some great thoughts, having been involved in repro rights since before Roe and did a fantastic job facilitating a conversation with three intersecting, but unique perspectives.

Overview:

More on the Roe anniversary with my anti-red state shaming and ditch your complacency rants for blue state residents. And we chatted about my #GetWell2015 series, how the GOP cares more about the contents of my uterus than the contents of my stomach, and the reality of access to healthcare in all its forms. Turns out medical, mental, and dental care are — GASP! — all medical care! This is no shock to poor people because we have always had to trade away, put off, and ration out our vision, dental, physical and mental health to balance our bills and grocery bills. How uncomfortable these realities make the privileged and our middle class relatives doesn’t change the messy overlaps become and how hard it is to juggle that many balls. (Yep; I’m going to find a way to fit balls into everything for a while because I hate the Patriots and inside I’m 10 years-old.)

In brief: My regular spot with Hal Sparks on WCPT Radio, Chicago!

Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

I love doing radio with Hal for lots of reasons, but especially when he turns a phrase that’s so simple and on point and new as he did in his intro to our segment on the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade: “Roe revealed that legality.” Rather than Roe making abortion legal, as most of us explain it, Hal emphasizes that the courts were merely affirming an existing legality granted by the Constitution. Expect to hear me use this wording in the future.

I got wonky in my description of the Hyde Amendment — the appropriations amendment to the budget prohibiting those insured by Medicaid from accessing abortion care — and turned it into my typical sunshiney call to action. YOU — Yes, You — You, there, in the blue state! You have a chance to prove your liberal/progressive descriptor and do something for ALL THE PEOPLE, including those in red states who’s representatives act against their interests. Hyde gets re-proposed and signed EVERY YEAR, which means right now — LIKE RIGHT NOW — you can tweet, write and call your presumably (at least “check the box” level) pro-choice reps and tell them not to support a budget with Hyde attached. ContactingTheCongress.org will tell you who your reps are if you don’t know and you can tweet right at them — and attach @WhiteHouse while you’re at it.

Clearly the president and his administration are movable on choice; they swapped language in less than 48 hours between the State of the Union (stigmatizing) and Roe 42 (supportive and firm). Let him know you expect him to wield his veto pen to help marginalized, low-income Americans.

Oh. The graphic. On the 42nd anniversary of Roe, the head of NARAL got preempted from discussing the anti-choice measure that passed the House by Tom Brady’s balls. Not even kidding. Dennis (our producer) played me out with Brady quotes to mark the end of satire. #RIPSatire

In brief: Justice and I discuss Roe turning 42 on the heels of the worst four years in reproductive rights in a generation and POTUS promising vetoes on anti-choice legislation while reinforcing abortion stigma in the SOTU. Note: I'm an activist/writer/media contributor full-time. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!

Overview:

It’s always a pleasure to be on with Justice! As per usual we went where the tangents took us, told personal stories to amplify the politics, and yelled at politicians who don’t have Americans’ interests at heart. I also yelled at complacent blue state residents who think they’re rights are safe. Spoiler alert: you already don’t have the rights you think you do.

I threw shade at the State of the Union: thanks for not hiccuping over the word “abortion,” but ease up on the stigma of bragging that it’s become less common. It’s less common because the ACA increased access to birth control and unintended pregnancies are down; now that is something to brag about. Today, the White House not only tweeted with NARAL’s #7in10ForRoe hashtag, they also edited their language and showed they are open to hearing from advocates. Bravo.

I shouted out some storytelling, stigma busting orgs and gave love to The Clinic Vest Project, the non-profit started by my mentor and who’s board I am privileged to sit on. We’re doing a fundraiser through the rest of the month to provide free resources to clinic defense escort groups across North America. Just $10 puts a vest on an escort. Links/info below in references.

And, as always, Justice asked me for something people can do. You can help repeal and prevent abortion coverage bans from anywhere! Especially if you’re in a blue state with ostensibly pro-choice reps, your calls and letters telling them not to support a budget with the Hyde Amendment (which prohibits Medicaid from covering abortion care) are powerful!

Overview:

Today was some riffing on what religious freedom actually means — despite what the extremist conservatives in Congress claim. We hit on freedom of speech and its limitations; Hal tied it to Charlie Hebdo because he likes transitions and segments to be tied together.

We talked elections and legislation and how the focus on the contents of my womb while disregarding the contents of my stomach (or lack thereof). Neither Hal nor I ever tire of pointing out hypocrisy, so please enjoy this round of “you are who we thought you were” GOP breakdown.

My regular spot with Hal Sparks on WCPT Radio, Chicago!

Overview:

The new GOP-lead Congress got sworn in and before they could unpack their offices, introduced the federal 20-week abortion ban as promised. Then, the next day, they introduced four more harmful, restrictive laws.

Hal and I talked about why they’re doing it — the politics of pushing the conversation to the extreme “right” and normalizing the language — and what the implications are for 2016. Too soon, you say? Primary fundraising should begin any moment because Iowa is less than a year away. I’m not gonna lie: I was happy to hear Hal would support Hillary in the general because we’ll have to, but he’s not psyched either. Despite our issues with her, though, the optics of a female democratic candidate vs whoeverthedouche the GOP runs is a pretty satisfying thought.

Hal riffed on his “God doesn’t care about your hat or He wouldn’t live where he had to look down on the top of your head” bit and I tossed in Carlin’s Pope hat bit on the heals of his GOP “pro-life" hypocrisy bit. The bonus of doing radio with a comic is that you get to infuse comedy into almost any topic, thus making it easier to digest.

And, since Hal is predicting another banner anti-equality week for our new Congress, I’m back on next Saturday to talk whatever harmful jerkbaggery they’re following up with. So tune in at 1pmEST/10amPST!

In brief: My last regular spot with Ledge.

Overview

With sadness, I post this: my last appearance on Dangerous Conversation. I am overwhelmed with appreciation for my friend Scott Legere who has generously given me the space to say what I think exactly how I think it without censors or interruption. Ledge is moving on to the next chapter in his life and career and I look forward to seeing what form that takes — and hopefully finding out how I can be a part of it.

As always, in this spot we talked about everything from religion and the Pope to our lives and personal beliefs to the election and what’s next for the country. I hope you’ll enjoy this conclusion to a two-year run with Ledge and the boys and that you’ll stay tuned for what might be around the corner. I promise to keep you updated on any future announcements.

To the Radio IO/Bubba Army listeners who have supported me from the beginning, I can’t adequately express my gratitude. You followed, read, re-tweeted, asked questions, got on board and came along for the ride. When I have needed monetary support for clinic defense or backers to stand up to anti-choice wanted posters, you were first in line. I can’t tell you what it has meant to me to have you all stand with, behind, and — at times — in front of me on issues the pundits say you don’t give a damn about. Thank you.

[TW: rape/victim blaming]

I was back on with Matthew Filipowicz to talk about the latest on Rolling Stone fueling rape culture, the self-preservation motivation behind victim blaming, and my own story.

Overview:

I’m always glad to be on with Matt, who covers rape culture and bodily autonomy and all manner of social justice on a regular basis. An extra thank you to him for putting a trigger warning in his podcast and on air before playing our interview; the care he takes with the survivors in his audience is much appreciated.

The aspect of the story we spent a good deal of time on that is unique to our conversation is how much self-preservation is at the root of victim blaming. Yes, there are some straight up jerkbags out there; but mostly people want to identify what makes a victim stand out so that they can avoid being victimized. I hope you dig the nuance of our segment.

This clip made it onto The Best of the Left Podcast where (if you’ve missed it) I am the social media and activism director. You can catch the entire 70 minute show here: Episode #885 "A guide to doing it all wrong (The UVA Story - Rape Culture)” I’ve known Jay! — the producer/creator — for years and have enjoyed working with him immensely, in large part because of how much he cares about his contribution to social narratives. In brief: [TW: rape/victim blaming] I was back on with Justice Putnam to talk about Rolling Stone feeding rape culture and my own story. Stick around for his powerful personal story toward the end.

Overview:

I’m always glad to be on with Justice and this spot was no exception. There are fewer jokes than typical because of the tough subject and because I’m still getting used to articulating my story for an audience. We discussed why people blame the victim (my own theories) and why “How do we fix this??” is a way to derail a conversation on an issue that indicts the entirety of our culture.

In brief: My regular spot with Hal Sparks on WCPT Radio, Chicago!

Overview:

Today’s segment comes with a Trigger Warning for rape, sexual assault, victim blaming, explicit descriptions of abuse, etc. Please take care when listening and sharing.

I told part of my story of abuse and repeated rape (a story that will publish this week to include additional coverage of the fall-out) and explained while RS’s use of the word “discrepancy” was basically calling “Jackie” (the victim) a liar because they couldn’t own up to their own journalistic failings.

We did a quick inclusion of Bill Cosby’s allegations and I read part of my friend Ali Safran’s story at Buzzfeed about why we should believe survivors even if they can’t tell their story EXACTLY the same hundreds of times.

UPDATE: RollingStone quietly edited and reissued their “apology” to a more appropriate blaming of their staff late on Saturday. With the damage very much done and the publisher of a right-wing extremist site having already outed the UVA victim by name.

In brief: Catching up on old clips — Stephanie Miller Show June 2013 edition!

Overview:

I realized I had some clips hanging around from before I started the Katie Speak Live and podcast feeds, so I’m cleaning house! It turns out, though, that these may be from a year and a half ago, but they’re more than just relevant. According to Molly Redden at Mother Jones"The War on Reproductive Rights Will Get a Lot Uglier Next Year” — and pretty much every body else (myself included), 2015 is gonna be an anti-choice legislation bonanza. Which means Hal and I might as well have been talking about this yesterday.

Please make allowances for how early this is in my media career; I’m sure there is an ableist and/or trans-exclusionary comment or phrase in here somewhere. I was and am learning. Thanks for the benefit of the doubt as I’ve evolved as fast as I can, identifying and breaking down my privilege as best I can. That my friends, followers, readers and listeners have been so kind and patient — as well as informative and honest — has allowed me to become a better reproductive justice advocate and ally.

And with that note, please enjoy the flashbacks to one of my spots on The Stephanie Miller Show with my friend Hal Sparks filling in as host!

My new piece at Truthout is long. Super extra long. When you hear the words of the activists from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas you'll know why I just couldn't cut any of what they had to say. The famously awful, omnibus anti-choice law HB2 is hitting the Valley the hardest -- and the reproductive justice community there is doing inspiring, tireless work without showing signs of letting up or admitting defeat. Quite the opposite, actually.

This is the audio companion to my, well, my love letter to the people who inspire me every day. When I can't get up, don't know how I'm going to keep working, or feel overwhelmed, I look to the people in this piece. They're heroes, all of them, and they're fighting for you.

Please take the time to thank Truthout by sharing the article directly from their website: "The Uncertainty of Access: Reproductive Health in the Rio Grande Valley." They are a nonprofit outlet without the corporate sponsorship you see on so many sites and they’ve given me a space to talk about important issues that are so often ignored. Thank you!

In brief: Back on with Justice to talk Texas, what’s next, RGV activist awesomeness and why you should care about HB2 no matter where you live! Oh, and VOTE.

Overview

Always happy to be on with Justice! We did the algebra of HB2, shared mutual admiration for the amazing work being done by Texas activists — including those who assist with transportation to clinics (Fund Texas Choice) and those working to end stigma. They’re an inspiring level of inexhaustible and undaunted by the scope of the work to be done.

I referenced Katha Pollitt’s new book "Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights” which discusses, in part, that our healthcare has been unnecessarily manhandled by the patriarchy. Women used to hand down knowledge to each other and share within the community; only recently is someone eternally up in your business as a barrier to things like birth control and managing miscarriages.

I recommended Jessica Mason Pieklo's piece at RH Reality Check on which cases to watch this Supreme Court season. Read and become smarter: "Six Supreme Court Cases Equality Advocates Should Watch This Term"

Justice, of course, did his call for voter turn-out next month. We’re both fans of voting with friends and neighbors — TAKE PEOPLE WITH YOU to make sure they can get there, don’t forget and y’all aren’t bored waiting in possible lines. The same day we got the good news about HB2, we got the bad news about the Texas voter ID law. These are not unrelated; there is a systemic, long-term plan for control being executed here. As my friend Lee Camp says, “Evil people have plans.” We’re basically being beaten by office supplies. So vote next month, even if it’s just to stick to the jerkbags.

In brief: My regular spot with Katie Vitale! We hate on the Fifth Circuit and swing the hypocrisy hammer at the GOP’s “family values."

Overview:

It is always a pleasure to be on with Katie Vitale to talk Texas and how what’s happening in my favorite state affects the entire country! We chatted the Fifth Circuit decision that closed the most recent 13 clinics (this was a few hours before SCOTUS stepped in, allowing the clinics to reopen pending a December hearing at the Appeals Court) and the badass activism happening in the Rio Grande Valley.

We also brought down the hypocrisy hammer on Greg Abbott and the broader GOP who claim they impose restrictions on access to reproductive health, cut funding to vital services and pass voter suppression laws because they have “family values.” Sure. We’ll believe that when they stop invading our bedrooms, pass paid family leave and increase education and childcare funding.

In brief: My regular spot with Hal Sparks on WCPT Radio, Chicago!

Overview:

There are now eight clinics legally allowed to provide abortion care to the 5.4 million Texans of reproductive age. The Fifth Circuit, who’s ruling this week to impose the last measure of the omnibus anti-abortion law known as HB2 which has now shuttered 80 percent of the state’s safe abortion providers, estimated that 900,000 Texans will now need to travel more than 150 miles to access care.

In a state where barriers to birth control and other early reproductive health services means over half the pregnancies are unintended, this is nothing less than a public health crisis. From nearly 50 clinics a few years ago to 8 — and those in the eastern cities are also seeing patients from neighboring Louisiana.

SUPPORT Fund Texas Choice and the Center For Reproductive Rights.

Hal does a great job of calling out Justice Scalia for protecting Hobby Lobby’s “right” to deny its employees full use of their earned health insurance for reproductive care while the CEOs invest in companies that manufacture drugs used for lethal injections. ::drop mic::

And so, Hal and I will keep talking about this. Over and over and over all the way to the Supreme Court and through the next election when I promise you access to reproductive care will be front and center whether we’re Ready For Hillary or not.

In brief: Panel chat with some great repro justice advocates!

Overview

While I was in Texas, I got the chance to record a panel interview with some of my favorite reproductive justice activists. With the travel & moving cross-country (more on that later), I didn’t get the clip posted right away. So, here it is with the intro from our hosts at Emoprog Army Radio Hour:

Hosted by @violentfanon and @caulkthewagon, with guests Britni de la Cretaz, Natasha Vianna, Jessica Luther and Katie Klabusich. Britni and Natasha are Boston-based activists, Katie is a journalist and activist based in Brooklyn, and Jessica is a journalist and activist based in Texas. All are active in reproductive justice fights across the country.

We discuss the McCutcheon Supreme Court decision that struck down Massachusetts' abortion clinic free speech buffer zone law, as well as legislation set to be implimented in Texas that will result in the majority of reproductive health clinics closing. We also discuss ways to fight back against these measures as well as defend against the broader assault against reproductive rights in America.

Overview

Today’s episode comes with a TRIGGER WARNING for intimate partner violence and child abuse. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached online 24/7 in over 170 languages at at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

Hal and I hadn’t had a chance to talk about Ray Rice and the NFL’s intimate partner violence issues yet, so there was a lot of ground to cover. We talked about Friday’s ridiculous press conference (Go, Rachel Nichols!), why Roger Goodell has GOT to go, the revictimization of Janay Rice with the video release, and how law enforcement isn’t the answer to a cultural problem.

We also touched on It’s On Us, a new campaign to end sexual assault. As with most programs, I’m in favor of parts and the intention as a whole while viewing segments as problematic. Having stars like Kerry Washington and figures like President Obama say the phrase “It’s on us to prevent sexual assault” is pretty revolutionary if seen in the context of culture change. The pledge is clear that ANY and ALL non-consensual sex is assault, full stop. And that we must create safe spaces where survivors are believed and supported.

The “bystander intervention” aspect is very “take the keys from your friends” campaign-ish and emphasizes situations like stranger rape and group party settings — which are the minority of assaults. Most assaults happen in the context of established relationships (friendships, dating, new partners, etc) and reinforcing that misperception is a problem. But I’m glad to be living in an era where the president of the United States feels he must weigh in on the plague of sexual assault. So, I’ll take this as a jumping off point and continue to call for even better programs and campaigns.

In brief: Justice Putnam of Netroots Radio was an early supporter of my #ExposeStopPatriarchy project. He had me on this week to talk about their “grifting” (his word) and the amazing activists on the ground in Texas I’ve profiled at Bitch, Alternet and Salon This work is ongoing; you can support it HERE.

Overview

Justice (yes, that’s his actual name) and I chatted about the fantastic work of NARAL Texas and Progress Texas getting anti-choicers on tape training their picketers to intimidate abortion clinic patients — because always start out with awesome! We then discussed my work to expose the group Stop Patriarchy and its patriarch Bob Avakian.

We contrasted this umbrella “activist” group touring the Lone Star State as disruptors while not contributing anything to the on-the-ground work with those organizations and activists I’ve profiled in the pieces I’ve published so far. Texans are doing inspiring work here and the condescension and deception of Stop Patriarchy is offensive and dangerous to the reproductive rights and justice movements.

Overview

Hal and I talked repro wins, hypocrisy and a 2016 sneak peak (we’re only a year away from primary fundraising, folks)!

The Center for Reproductive Rights and Whole Woman’s Health are back in court Monday to fight the admitting privileges TRAP law slated to close all but six of the remaining Texas Clinics September 1st. (I’ll be there covering a few stories!) This will be an interesting back to back with the ruling in favor of the Mississippi clinic last week that allows its doors to remain open. Stay tuned…

And Hal and I gave some love to the Notorious R.B.G. — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. I tell you why we’re SO DAMN LUCKY she isn’t retiring as we comment on her new awareness of the pop culture fame she’s experiencing following the scathing Hobby Lobby decision dissent.

We also spent some time on the Satanists trolling Hobby Lobby to see how far the “firmly held religious belief” ruling can go. We all know religious beliefs come with a conservative Biblical interpretation requirement.

Overview

So Hobby Lobby happened. Businesses and corporations aren’t just people; they’re now religious people. Despite EVERYONE calling it a “narrow” decision, immediate rulings in both lower district courts AND right there at SCOTUS made it clear feminists aren’t being alarmist banshees. Hal and I make some light of Hobby Lobby for sanity’s sake, while hopefully conveying the importance of the deacon and the ramifications especially for low-income workers without many employment options.

In Dalia Lithwick’s predictably brilliant piece for Slate, she dispels the “narrow” narrative this way (emphasis mine):

[I]n an unsigned emergency order granted Thursday evening, the very same court said that this very same workaround it had just praised was also unconstitutional, that this workaround also burdened the religious freedom of religious employers. Overnight, the cure has become the disease. Having explicitly promised that Hobby Lobby would go no further than Hobby Lobby, the court went back on its word, then skipped town for the summer.

Meanwhile, clergy in Illinois protest Hobby Lobby by handing out condoms — at Hobby Lobby. This is my favorite thing.

Hal and I also went into what Free Speech is and isn’t exactly — aka, you aren’t free from consequences ones the speech leaves your lips. And we trace all this conservative fear and outrage back to the whole women and brown people demanding their rights, slowly but surely. Rich white dudes are thinking “revolution,” yanno, to protect themselves.

And Hal describes the states (including his home state of Kentucky) opposing same-sex marriage as being “in the business of animal husbandry.” I cosign.

We also took some callers. You can be one of those, by the way: 773-763-9278.

Yep. More McCullen, Supreme Court and clinic defense. This week’s unanimous SCOTUS decision struck down the Massachusetts 35-foot state-wide buffer zone protecting reproductive healthcare clinics and open the door to challenges against most of the patchwork of ordinances and laws across the country. Hal and I talk Scalia’s conflict, the reality of violence, the hypocrisy of upholding “free speech zones,” etc. and SCOTUS not giving so much as half a care for the real lives of real people.

I’m always glad to do Matt’s show! It’s another sexual assault and consent discussion-laden clip, so trigger warnings and self-care advisories for sure. We talked the broader implications of the George Will column and I’m happy to report that this show is posting the same day the St. Louis Post-Dispatch announced they’re dropping Will’s column! If that doesn’t sound that exciting because you don’t know midwestern papers, it’s a big one. It has a solid history and it’s going to cost Will in syndication pay. Also, someone has to be the first. Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Rich White Dudes Commandeer All The Things (06/14/14)

Overview

I can always count on Hal to join me in railing against misogyny and rampant misunderstanding of consent in our culture. So when George Will penned his rape apology, victim blaming column, I knew we’d be chatting about it on HSRP.

And we touched on the new ramp-up to "re-war" (?) in Iraq. It fits with the rich, white, male privilege in our political class who only value their own lives and autonomy. For the same reason they think they can commandeer my body at will, they think they have the right to seize land and resources and power overseas.

Radio Dispatch -- "Katie Klabusich on WaPo & #SurvivorPrivilege" (06/12/14)

Overview

I was more than happy to be back on Radio Dispatch with Molly Knefel! (John, apparently, had the audacity to take a vacation of some sort…) We talked The Washington Post — aka, Misogyny Daily — and their run of “Oh My God, you cannot be serious…” articles.

I was pretty emotionally exhausted after several days of talking about sexual assault non-stop and having people attack me as “not really raped” and “mocking survivors” because I didn’t describe any of the graphic physical details. They didn’t speak to Will’s column the way the more “subtle” and “less rapey” assaults do, so I left them for another time. Molly was generous and forgiving of my occasional stutter and pause to redirect my thoughts. She’s good people.

I’m including her intro in case you haven’t heard about WaPo’s awfulness and you should definitely check out the entire episode — ”Radio Dispatch: June 12, 2014” — and subscribe already because it’s fantastic.

Overview

Variation on a theme — the inability of our broader culture to understand the concept of consent — was the topic on both of our minds. And since I was in the Chicago studio for both hours, Hal and I dug deep into the idea of what he calls (and I like) “cultivating yes culture.”

We teach “no means no,” which I had considered problematic even before admitting to myself that I was on the receiving end of intimate partner violence over a five year period with my ex. So, drawing on the recent stories in the news about “honor killings” abroad and misogyny-fueled murders here at home, Hal and I did what we do: we discussed third-rail, adult topics much ignored by our culture because of discomfort and an outdated sense of decorum.

This show comes with trigger warnings, though still FCC clean. We — of course — had our silly moments, but this HSRP is definitely on the serious side. We took several calls, so if you’re downloading/streaming just for me (thanks!), remember it’s Hal’s show. I’m just in the sidecar. And next time — tune in and call in!

I recommended Tristan Taormino’s PuckerUp website for the people who think asking for consent “ruins the moment.” Get all her things; listen to her radio show: Sex Out Loud (nsfw).

My spot with on Dennis Trainor Jr’s new show that landed me on Newsbusters for being unapologetic about liking sex.

Overview

It was patriarchy on parade today (everyday?) for my spot with Hal. Jill Abramson got fired from the helm of The New York Times this week and she claims it happened after expressing concern about pay equity. She was subsequently called “pushy” and sent packing. There’s a bit of debate about her believability; as Andi Zeisler argues at Bitch Media, the plausibility of her story is enough to cause pause.

Also on the show, Senator Marco Rubio’s latest lip-smacking inane claims. I admit to being excited and immediately texting Hal when I saw he had claimed liberals couldn’t denigrate his climate change denial — which is totes based on science — because we deny the proven science behind life beginning at conception. Seriously. This man is a United States senator.

As usual we expound on the broader implications and cultural commentary. And then Hal misses me saying I had to go, so I abruptly fail to return after the break at the end of the clip. BUT! In two weeks I’ll be in the Chicago studio for the full two hours, so tune in Saturday, May 31 12-2pmEST at WCPT for a solid side-car appearance.

Publicly Poly

If you don’t already know, I’m the social media and activism director for The Best of the Left Podcast. I love this gig. I'd known Jay!, the producer/director for several years before working with him, which means I wasn’t surprised to discover he’s great to collaborate with. I find the work really satisfying for a slate of reasons; at the top of the list is the voicemail and commentary section at the end of the show. The regular listeners are smart and engaged and know their shit. Sometimes when less empathetic, tolerant people stumble upon the show, our listeners will handle it and do some regulating based on their personal experiences and educational backgrounds.

Recently, polyamory came up in an analogy on the show. A caller predictably conflated — if not outright confused — it with polygamy, prompting additional conversation. So for the first time, I paused and called in to comment. I’ve been asked a bunch since starting to talk publicly about my non-heteronormativity publicly to write about it. This won’t be the last time; it’s simply a good intro to the topic here and a little groundwork for further posts.

I’m including all of the voicemails and Jay!’s words from the episode with my call. If you want to catch the start, check out the final segment of Best of the Left Podcast, episode #824 Investing in a green future (Climate)” and the final segments of the episodes that follow.

You’ll discover why I really like Jay! when you get to his closing. He describes my favorite type of allyship — the "accidental/just try not to be an asshole type.” If you dig it and find yourself listening to the rest of the episode, you can subscribe to BOTL for free.

The easy download/stream as well as the text of my voicemail is available at the Katie Speak Live! tab on my website.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm — Just Say No: The Privilege of Opting Out (04/19/14)

Overview

Today I used the Bundy Ranch hypocrisy and Hal’s theory on the GOP misunderstanding of consent to posit a new, umbrella theory: most white, cis, straight rich dudes have never confronted the concept of consent because they were born with the privilege of assumed consent in place.

We also talked libertarianism and the hypocrisy of not understanding consent while basing an entire political/social concept on the desire to say “No” to anything at any time.

Links to on-air references:

Radio Dispatch was at the top of my list when the ProLife Action League put my face on a poster. I knew John and Molly would be interested in both the anti-choice rhetorical and actual violence escalation as well as the corporate media dismissal of domestic terrorism perpetrated by white, Christian American citizens.

Nuanced and relevant, I knew this conversation would be the perfect place to start talking about the PLAL and their place in the anti-choice movement. Much thanks to John and Molly for jumping at the story and having me on basically last minute to talk about the state of reproductive healthcare access in this country and how picketers, targeting and intimidation tactics are contributing to the erosion of our rights.

Yesterday I had the privilege of jumping on the BradCast with one of my favorite investigative journalists and broadcasters, Brad Friedman. He invited Eric Schiedler of the ProLife Action League on to respond to my perception of the Lenten "prayer" campaign. Brad might now be my favorite person.

Though he primarily focuses on voting (he's why we know things about voting machines), climate and the corrupting influence of money in politics, he wielded the reproductive rights language like a pro and asked questions that wouldn't even have occurred to me. Definitely take the time to listen to his full show and subscribe to his blog.

Also take the time to leave a comment and thank him for bringing the issue of widespread clinic closures, necessity of clinic defense escort volunteers and renewed climate of violence around basic reproductive healthcare. We need every ally; he is certainly a strong one.

The Nicole Sandler Show -- Clinic Closures and Weaponized Prayer (03/31/14)

Today, I jumped on with Nicole Sandler to talk about the Pro Life Action League targeting, clinic closures and violence against providers not being a thing of the past.

She put some solid show notes together along with the full podcast at: "Colbert, Christie, Climate, Christian hypocrisy". We also discussed the Religion Dispatches piece as well as David Cohen's great article for Talking Points Memo: "When Anti-abortion Harassment Gets Personal"

I don't plan to quit talking about this. If it's ok to target me with multiple posts, emails, internet memes, twitter harassment, etc. -- who exactly does the ProLife Action League consider to be off-limits? I'm not exactly a private citizen considering my public activism and media work, but I'm certainly not the highest profile pro-choice advocate or talking head in this country.

More media seems to be taking notice that anti-choice groups aren't limiting their targeting to slandering and threatening doctors. They're moved on to journalists and activists. This is not ok. Still waiting on the corporate media to wake up. (Yes, I'm aware that could be a long wait, but I'm not giving up.)

So, thank you to Nicole and other independent hosts/writers who understand the history and are appropriately outraged at the (at best) irresponsible behavior and rhetoric of the PLAL. Hopefully, it can shine a light on the behind the scenes destructive actions they've been engaged in since their public move to non-violence.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm — Purity Parade (03/22/14)

“Nanny State!” “Get your hands off my [insert anything here] !”

With the corporate/1% giveaways and the poking around in our bedrooms the GOP does and tries to do (over 200 anti-choice bills introduced ALREADY in 2014), it just gets increasingly silly to hear them upset about the “nanny state.” They’re not letting up.

Hal tackled the failing GOP “rebranding” effort on today’s show; I got to come on for the purity/sex police portion of the show. It is nice to give the ProLife Action League and other anti-choice groups more than one reason to find me “hard to like”.

I jumped in as Hal was doing is rant on legitimate sex as the GOP sees it:

You have a duty to the Motherland to make babies. And if you don’t do that, your relationship is less legitimate.

This, of course, is extremely out of touch with the overwhelming majority of Americans: "Poll: Majority Opposes Employer Exemption From Birth Control Mandate”. Not that that’ll stop them from trying whether or not the Hobby Lobby case goes their way.

I gave a nod to the disregard for law and order coming out of Georgia with the enhanced Stand Your Ground provisions: ”Georgia Legislators Think Felons Should Be Able To Shoot You" by <https://twitter.com/cliffschecter">Cliff Schecter.

This lead, obviously, to a discussion about “respect” and how conservatives think it should be earned Sopranos/Godfather style. Ya know, with machismo and blood lines. White, male blood lines.

And Hal couldn’t resist poking me with the Purity Ball documentary Nightline is doing. If you haven’t heard about purity balls and how fathers claim their daughters, presenting them to the Lord as chaste until they can be passed on to their husbands, well, you can imagine how I responded: “I may have done six or seven things today — and it’s 1pm in NYC — that the GOP/Purity Ball crowd thinks should be illegal…and may be in some places.”

Dangerous Conversation -- PLAL Wanted Poster! (03/17/14)

As always, chatting with Ledge was fantastic. He squeezed me in on a busy Monday because of the PLAL wanted poster business and we talked the reality of anti-choice violence. (Yes, we managed to laugh and make it interesting.) This isn’t a long gone history, it’s happening now. If groups feel like they are free to target me, who exactly isn’t a target?

We wrapped up in time to chat BASEBALL and HOCKEY because it’s what we do. So, enjoy that new followers/listeners who thought I was all abortion all the time. And, because it’s the internet this is NSFW — Not Safe For Work — as I do tend to swear when I chat with Ledge. Not gonna lie, it’s one reason I do the show. (Not really, but do I appreciate a non-FCC outlet.)

Much thanks to Ledge for asking how people can support me (link below) and how they could push back against the PLAL. If you want, you can contribute to my Abortion Funds bowl-a-thon by donating in their name! Click here: High Roellers Team, NYAAF

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- "ProLifeActionLeague Targeting & My Refusal to Shut Up" (03/15/14)

The ProLife Action League made history with my face. Also that of an abortion provider and pro-choice journalist. We’re on what is essentially a wanted poster for all 40 days of Lent with dog whistle language like “notorious” and “pray for those involved with the culture of death.” Obviously, Hal was going to have me on to discuss it.

My friends Lizz Winstead & Dianna Anderson are quoted on my blog where I thank them for publicly calling out the PLAL’s use of prayer as a weapon. Also, the fantastic folks at Religion Dispatches covered their targeting campaign with the appropriate tone, history and interviews with PLAL head Eric Scheidler.

The piece — "For Love or Threat: Pro-Life Prayer Includes Names, Photos of Abortion-Rights Advocates” by Alana Massey — is remarkably balanced. Please visit their pages/feeds to comment and thank them. Highlights:

Or, in Scheidler’s view, “[Dr. Chastine] was rather naïve to think she could be this anonymous abortionist coming into Wichita, at George Tiller’s former practice of all places.” Reverend Harry Knox, president and CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, doesn’t agree that God’s will is quite so self-evident. Campaigns like PLAL’s, with their use of names and photographs, are potential catalysts for harassment according to Reverend Knox. “Creating what looks like a wanted poster, then asking people to pray for those shown, is just hate in love's clothing.”

Those of you who’ve listened/followed Hal and I for a while, will remember when I became an official feminist menace — the first time the PLAL wrote about me. What’s enjoyable for those of us who think hypocrisy is important to avoid and rampant in anti-choice groups are the competing signals I’m getting from them.

The PLAL just can’t seem to decide with they want me to keep talking or renounce my wicked ways. First, they decry: I Want Katie Klabusich to Keep On Talking! complete with superlatives and a bastardization of my NOH8 photo, captioned "No, Katie! Don’t tape your mouth closed!” And now they want me to sit down, shut up, and renounce my wicked ways. Clearly, I’m not listening.

Perhaps you can help them understand why. Feel free to respectfully comment on their blog and Facebook page — which apparently is going to feature my face for the duration of Lent.

Today’s extra nod goes to producer Dennis, who honored my new “notorious” label (a long-time dog-whistle to the anti-choice fringe that “it’s totally cool if you hurt this person”) by playing Duran Duran's “Notorious” for my bumper music. Dennis, you are spectacular as always.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm — What Rape Culture? Maine Edition (03/01/14)

Maine state Rep. Lawrence Lockman is awful. Like, really, really awful. Blogger Mike Tipping put together a post of quotes pulled from the course of Lockman’s career about rape, the LGBT community and AIDS, and abortion. I know, you’re shocked to hear that some old white dude is anti-gay and anti-woman and anti-anyone-not-having-missionary-procreative sex within the confines of a marriage bed. Or that those deviating from his narrow thoughts on appropriate sexual behavior deserve whatever punishment they might get.

Hal and I went into more depth on our theories about GOP men not understanding consent or agency. Hal wonders aloud if Lockman has ever even had consensual sex. We toss some appropriate rage at the Alabama rapist sentenced to PROBATION for his third conviction as well ask, “What rape culture?”

Oh, and then there was this from Virginia state senator Steve Martin:

I don’t expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I’m not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child’s host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn’t want it to remain alive.

Robin Marty makes all kinds of points about why his rewrite was also awful: "Virginia Lawmaker Calls Pregnant Women ‘Hosts,' and That’s a Good Thing”. And Feminsting said what I was thinking: "So, please, Sen. Martin, don’t hold back–keep telling us what you really think.”

I’ll give the real Steve Martin the final word:

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- "GOP's Continued Trouble With Consent" (02/08/14)

Happy 2nd Birthday to my niece, Norah!! I did today’s show on the drive to her birthday party, so I was in a festive, excitable mood. Which means, I had thoughts about some desperate audio from the right-wing extremists…

In case you missed it, here’s the story as only Wonkette can say it: Rand Paul Wants Dems To Give Back All Their Filthy Bill Clinton Sex Money

Rand Paul said more dumb things. This time they were about Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky and an oddly place “slam” on Senator Claire McCaskill. Hal continues to contend that all of this nonsense boils down to the Republican men being completely unable to understand the concept of consent.

I add that they don’t view a woman’s sexuality outside the context of a man’s desire, which means consent is irrelevant. Of course, this leads to my laughing at the idea Rush and his party have that sex with feminists is no fun. The only people who find this more funny than feminists themselves are the people who get to have sex with feminists because it’s the most fun of all the things ever.

As promised, here’s the link to the t-shirt by my friendCamille DeMere that I couldn’t read on air: I Only Fuck Feminists

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm — “SOTU and 1000 GOP Responses" (02/01/14)

If you follow me on twitter, you’ve already gotten most of my take on the State of the Union and the 100000 GOP responses. But Hal and I do it longer than 140 characters (Hey-yo!) and with audio fun. I obviously disagree that POTUS gave an appropriate nod to repro rights/access, but Hal and I both loved the Mad Men line because it so wonderfully set up CMR response and Rand Paul’s inanity.

All you need to know about Representative Cathy McMorris Rogers is in the NARAL graphic that accompanies this segment. Enjoy and pass it around. Here’s the Media Matters for America piece I referenced that fact checked FoxNews et al on the ACA: "Called on to Explain Big Story, Media Botches Obamacare."

Policy Mic did a great piece fact-checking all the responses: ”Fact Check: What Republicans Got Wrong in Their SOTU responses,”. FactCheck.org handled McMorris Rogers on “layoffs” because of the ACA: ”Is Obamacare Causing Health Care Layoffs?” And, finally, a Spokane paper broke down the lies in the claim that “Betty from Spokane” was seeing a massive increase in her health insurance costs because of the ACA: "'Betty in Spokane’ cited in McMorris Rodgers’ speech, declined health insurance options.”

Quick apology about my connection: anybody who wants to purchase a progressive radio station and deck it out with super equipment that’d rock. WCPT has phone issues; we do everything we can to minimize that.

Also, I’m running the segment after mine because the audio is too golden to set aside. Catch the Rush response to the SOTU if you can handle the misogyny. And Hal predicts the near future of the political fights — immigration, economics (i.e. jobs), ACA/healthcare, and ESPECIALLY clear division b/t how Dems and Repubs feel about a women controlling her body and make the same pay. Hal has never been more right: “It’s because they really do believe that women are less…and inherently weaker.”

HSRP 01/25/14 -- Roe turns 41 and Mike "Uncle Sugar" Huckabee

If you missed it, Mike Huckabee is awful. Or as Alex Wagner of MSNBC put it, he’s royally “Hucked Up.” This once decent-on-economic-justice-issues governor from Arkansas is apparently throwing his hat into the 2016 ring with the departure of the indicted Governor Ultrasound and soon-to-be-indicted Governor BridgeGate. To do that these days, you have to make an appearance at the GOP winter meeting dressed up as a misogynistic extremist.

You should really read his whole speech. Robin Marty has the highlights along with commentary that makes it digestible in her Care2 Repro Wrap: "Uncle Sugar Wants to Give you the Pill and Other News."

I also suggest Imani Gandy’s spectacular audio on TWiB: "Mike Huckabee: Idiot". Hal and I gave a shout-out and some love to NateDogg, who I hear is doing better. xoxo And I referenced Imani’s piece on nuns, birth control, the ACA, etc. all made simple in non-lawyer speak: "The Establishment Clause: A Simpler Answer to the Contraception Question.”

Oh, and a word to producer Dennis at WCPT who’s bumper music is often eclipsed by Hal’s or my excitement to jump into a topic or the travails of terrestrial radio. He gave love to Joan Jett, “Do You Wanna Touch Me” for Huckabee’s “libido” comments and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me” for the “Uncle Sugar” nonsense. Someday I’m going to steal you away to a studio with dream equipment so everyone can appreciate your genius, my friend.

"Pot, Pope, Pucks and Vaginas" -- Dangerous Conversation, New Media Mondays (01/06/14)

So excited to be back on Dangerous Conversation with Scott Legere! We talked about EVERYTHING in this round of New Media Mondays. We touched on my work with clinic defense programs serving as an escort for patients at reproductive health centers, stopped to praise the Pope (again -- this is becoming a habit), chatted substance preferences and pot prohibition and ended on my BLACKHAWKS!

I got the reprojustice stats from the awesome Guttmacher Institute and the tireless, fountain of knowledge that is Robin Marty.

The clip Ledge played of the awful "Gosh, I never thought about why anyone would have an abortion, but imma try and outlaw it" legislator was from Rachel Maddow via UpWorthy.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- "Shut Up and Know Your Role!" 2013 Break Down (12/28/13)

Happy New Year! Almost…

Hal had me on to break down the year, both the good and the bad. We cited pieces from Robin Marty "Repro Wrap: End of the Year, End of the Clinics" and Media Matters "Know Your Role And Shut Your Mouth: How Conservatives Treated Women in 2013". I also mentioned the extremely important investigative piece by Adele Stan on how there is no longer (if there ever was) a line between "social" conservatives and "economic" conservatives. Her piece Anatomy of the War on Women lays out the Koch brothers, et al and their funneling of money to groups like Americans United for Life.

We also talked about how the Democrats finally got it together and changed the filibuster rules for judicial nominees. If you nodded off, WAKE UP because this is huge. This recent Majority Report segment with Cliff Schecter gives you more if you missed the story or didn't get how important a 90 seat swing in our judiciary is the most important thing to happen in 2013: The Dems Finally Go Nuclear.

Finally, go to Lady Parts Justice to find out how Lizz Winstead and Revolution Messaging are following up the Texas Women Forever telethon. I'll be involved in this campaign to call out awful politicians and register voters ahead of the 2014 midterms. We must -- and can! -- prevent another 2010-style Tea Party victory lap!

Note about the meme/picture selection: I loved everything about NARAL hiring Ilyse Hogue as their president in 2013 even before I had the chance to get to know her a little. She unapologetic about reproductive justice, doesn't parse words and has made the organization simultaneously focused on the bigger picture and the personal narratives that advance issues surrounding abortion care. I couldn't agree more with her quote, delivered in Texas during the special legislative session that catapulted Wendy Davis to national fame. The far right-wing may think they're winning in the short term -- victories that do affect real people's lives. However, they have mobilized women and their allies. They better fasten their seat belts for 2014…

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- MI Dodges Democracy With "Rape Insurance" Bill (12/14/13)

Michigan subverted democracy this past week via "citizen petition" -- a way for 4% of the population to go around a ballot initiative that would never pass and a governor who has vetoed similar legislation already. Why did they do that? To mandate that women must decide in advance if they wanted to have abortion care coverage on their insurance, even in cases of rape and fetal abnormality.

Robin Marty covered it at Care2 -- As Michigan Passes 'Rape Insurance' Bill, One Senator Tells of Her Own Sexual Assault -- and Talking Points Memo covered the democracy head fake -- Michigan Legislature Passes Controversial Abortion Insurance Bill.

Hal and I discussed the broader implications, the fact that Michigan may be alone on the democracy subversion angle, but it certainly isn't alone on the insurance restrictions for abortion care.

And I got a little love for being a co-producer, co-writer, social media director, media promoter, fundraiser for #20 on Policy Mic's 28 Most Iconic Feminist Moments of 2013. Wait'll they get a load of 2014…

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Voters Reject Abortion Restrictions AGAIN (11/23/13)

Hal had me on to recap a very busy week in reproductive justice. And, in case I don't remember to say it often enough, my gratitude for his insistence that these issues are covered on his show continues to grow with every spot.

When abortion restrictions are put to popular vote, they lose. Every time. Full stop. Albuquerque proved it AGAIN. The 20-week ban lost by a ten point margin because of grassroots efforts by pro-choice groups. Hal continues to hammer the point that this chipping away municipality by municipality and clinic by clinic is a concerted, long-term plan by the extreme right-wing. Which is a good chance for me to plug Robin Marty and Jessica Mason Pieklo's book, Crow After Roe that outlines the legislative and court-based effort to overturn Roe v Wade.

Texas is AH-MAZING. The #TexasWomenForever telethon ROCKED with more than $54,000 raised from more than 800 individual donors. The next morning, however Justice Scalia spoke, giving his seal of approval on the admitting privileges provision that shut down 1/3 of the clinics in Texas and threatening to close more doors in the long term. This crisis continues and is about you even if you're in a "safe blue state."

We pause to say, "Fuck you, Rush." Ok, we stayed FCC appropriate, but everybody knows what Hal and I were thinking.

I posit that Rick Perry think's he's god, which was corrected by Hal. Perry thinks he was appointed by god, a much scarier proposition.

And we took a few minutes for the ACA destruction plan uncovered by Talking Points Memo. I'm hearing none of it because I got my first premium bill for the NY state exchange this week which means I am officials ready to go for January 1 and comprehensive coverage! I dare the GOP to try and take it from me. Seriously. Try.

Hal Sparks Radio Prgm — TexasWomenForever (11/09/13)

#TexasWomenForever -- November 18, streaming everywhere!

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can Choose: Online Telethon to Support TX Women

The nation is pulling together for the women of Texas who -- following the lifting of the Fifth Circuit Court stay -- only have abortion access in six of the state's 256 counties.

THIS IS NOT OK! We love Texas -- geography should NOT equal access. So, the amazing, hilarious Lizz Winstead and completely unpredictable, spectacular Sarah Silvermanhave pulled together a last minute telethon with a line-up you won't believe.

Hal was kind enough to let me come on and plug the event, which has gotten more Texas-y, more abortion-y, more funny, more crazy, more surprise guest-y than I built up on the show! I'll be live tweeting from the event account (as well as my own) @TXWomenForever and using the hashtag #TexasWomenForever, so get a group together to watch the livestream (link coming soon to the event page) and join in the conversation!

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Fight Back Texas, take 2 (11/02/13)

Right now, if you are able, Lilith Fund and Stigma Relief need your help assisting those patients traveling great distance at great expense to access reproductive care. Whole Women's Health closed 1/3 of its clinics without notice, calling patients the night before to cancel appointments. Give if you can and spread the word.

Hal and I picked up our conversation from Friday's Stephanie Miller Show segment on Fight Back Texas. ICYMI: Thursday night's Fifth Circuit Court decision on HB2 which effectively shut down 1/3 of the Texas abortion providers effective immediately. Greg Abbott, the Texas State Attorney General -- who gets more and more awful the more you know about him, won his appeal of the stay granted earlier in the week against the TRAP provision requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at area hospitals. Appeals courts in other parts of the country have struck down admitting laws, which means the next step for legal action is the Supreme Court -- where Anthony Kennedy will likely be the deciding vote.

According to TeaFund, there are 254 counties in Texas. As of today, only 6 of them have an abortion provider. The laws will continue to be challenged, but in the meantime this is real people's lives that are being devastated.

Stephanie Miller Show -- Fight Back Texas (11/01/13)

Whole Women's Health closed 1/3 of its clinics without notice, calling patients the night before to cancel appointments. Give if you can and spread the word.

I joined Hal Sparks, filling in for Stephanie, to talk about Thursday night's Fifth Circuit Court decision on HB2 which effectively shut down 1/3 of the Texas abortion providers effective immediately. Greg Abbott, the Texas State Attorney General -- who gets more and more awful the more you know about him, won his appeal of the stay granted earlier in the week against the TRAP provision requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at area hospitals. Texas needs us. First, to push back on all the "just let them secede" and "well, of course, it's Texas" sarcasm. The activists there are brave and tireless and spend time on the front lines with little appreciation or recognition. Geography should not dictate access to health, life or Constitutional rights. Also, if you need a thing to affect you directly to get you motivated, this assault on reproductive rights isn't going to stop at the red state borders.

In the segment, I mentioned the book Crow After Roe by Robin Marty and Jessica Mason Pieklo for anyone interested in the extreme right-wing's long term plan on overturning my right to bodily autonomy.

If you want more on the court situation, check out Sam Seder and Cliff Schecter on The Majority Report the morning after the decision.

The Alan Colmes Show --Pushing Back on Right-Wing ACA Hysteria (10/23/13)

Alan Colmes caught Robin Marty's piece in Rolling Stone, Six Stories of Obamacare Already Making a Difference, and had me come on to talk about my experience signing up for the NY state health exchange which lead to me proclaiming: I'm in The Tank For Obamacare!

We discussed the right-wing hysteria over the Affordable Care Act's national exchange website, the difference between the state and national exchanges, which states participated and how the ACA and its health insurance reform provisions have already created real relief for people across the country.

Medicare For All and the next reform is the goal. Alan gives out the info on the current legislators with pending bills and we lament that while the ACA makes strides, there's work to be done.

Alan and I didn't have time to get into details on why the national site is having so many more problems than the state sites. If listening to Congressional panels and investigations makes you yawn and the partisan bickering makes you nuts, Sam Seder and Cliff Schecter dissected what actually happened with the exchange roll out on Friday's Majority Report (which you should already be listening to): The Majority Report, Casual Friday (10/25/13) with Cliff Schecter

I really enjoyed doing the show -- especially chatting with someone who talks as quickly as I do. Alan has invited me back and asked me to write for his website, Liberaland, so look for me soon under the "New Voices" tab.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm — Shutdown and the Return of Sanity? (10/019/13)
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is up on iTunes! Subscribe to never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! There will be a podcast feed for the audio versions of my blog posts coming as well, so stay tuned.

I remain an eternal optimist, if a skeptical one. The poll numbers for the GOP have been drastically dragged down by the tea party intransigence in the House -- to the lowest percentage since polls have been taken on favorability. People are legitimately angry and that anger overshadowed the shaky roll out to the Affordable Care Act. With midterms just a year away and those enrolling in the exchanges about to experience comprehensive health insurance -- some for the first time in their entire lives, I see hope on the horizon.

Hal and I chat crazy vs pragmatism and how IN LOVE I am with Obamacare, how I'm not alone in my excitement as detailed by Robin Marty in Rolling Stone this week, and how the McCutcheon case heard by SCOTUS could rain all over my optimism.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Now with 100% less Hal Sparks! 10/6/13
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

If you're streaming/downloading/tuning in for Hal Sparks, you won't find him here! I took over the hosting seat and the mic on October 6, 2013 to talk GOP shutdown. I stacked the show with my favorite people and let them tackle how the Republican intransigence affects real people. We threw out stats and facts inconvenient to Speaker Boehner and his caucus, mocked the insanity of a Congressional minority demanding something for doing their damn jobs and I took down a ring-wing caller who thought he'd amuse himself by playing "Stump the Fill-in Host."

We had a very heart-felt story from a listener who understands what cuts to the WIC program mean, ridiculous audio provided by Johnny -- in the sidecar as always, and I gave producer Dennis a heart-attack by announcing that the FCC was out of commission due to the shutdown. Check it out, share, subscribe and go follow/read/listen to/enjoy my badass guests!

Guest info:

Robin Marty, reproductive justice warrior! Also, author of Crow After Roe, a book everyone should get, and journalist/encyclopedia of state-level repro health issues, laws and pending legislation.

Michael Brooks, producer and contributor to The Majority Report and host of Intersection at Aslan Media.

Cliff Schecter, progressive media guru, pundit, author, advocate and gracious guest.

Imani Gandy, The Angry Black Lady, host/writer/blogger/recovering lawyer/reproductive rights and intersectional feminist badass.

Dean Obeidallah, comedian and filmmaker of the new documentary The Muslims are Coming!, now rent-able/buy-able on iTunes. Here's his opinion piece, 10% of Americans like Congress: Are they nuts?, we discuss on the show.

Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Ted Cruz Faux Filibuster Fundraising, 9/28/13
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

Ted Cruz is beyond ridiculous. Hal couldn't resist spending some time on his faux filibuster -- aka fundraising speech -- and I couldn't resist the Seuss moment. You have to hear Cliff Schecter nail the Cruz irony deficiency for "Casual Fridays" on the Majority Report, which I bastardized badly.

Here's the Ted Cruz tweet that makes it clear his staff rivals him in a lack of basic governing lingo: "SCOTUS is what?"

In all seriousness, the House GOP is moving the country toward a governmental shut down so they can continue their temper tantrum. Even if a budget manages to pass, the debt ceiling is right around the corner. Don't forget to thank former representative, now governor, Mike Pence (R-IN) for kicking off the debt ceiling-budget merry-go-round. (My piece on Pence and his cohorts: anti-woman language to the budget they passed at midnight Sunday morning, should give you deja vu. They haven't learned anything from 2012; let's make sure we have.

"Papal Praise" -- Dangerous Conversation, New Media Mondays (09/23/13)
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

I took my papal praise radio tour on Dangerous Conversation for New Media Mondays. We talked about my piece Oh. My. God. on a shift in culture from the Vatican and its possible effect on Americans no matter their religious heritage. Lee Camp got a mention for being in the "I can't believe I'm praising the pope" predictament along with me: What the Pope has Said That's Too Dangerous to Talk About. Ledge is slightly concerned that Lee's MOC may lead to the apocolypse, so watch at your own risk.

Other topics included optimism for LGBT rights, abortion access, contraception mainstreaming, stem cell research normalization, and -- of course -- masturbation. Ledge gets a bit nostalgic about his seed, so this is for him: the bit from John Fugelsang on the history of the church's stance concerning "spilling your seed" and its centuries-long misinterpretation: "Birth Control vs Fake Christians".

We discuss American Catholics and their incorrect rep as a conservative voting block, me telling the story of the Chicago Police Dept captain who didn't appreciate the 14-Foot guilt Jesus across from a clinic where I escorted. (The particular protest that prompted the erection of the Guilt Jesus is returning and it's nationwide. Follow Robin Marty's blog for info on the "40 Days For Life" invasion coming to your community.)

Of course, not everyone is excited about or gets the nuanced change happening in Vatican politics. I fell required to include at least one dissenting voice. From RH Reality Check: "My Short Lived Hope for a More Compassionate Catholic Church"

Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

Moral ambiguity episode! wherein I join Hal and John mid-Ted Cruz discussion. I couldn't resist including the lead-in ahead of my segment because, well, Braveheart reference. Also, Hal boils the Conservative/GOP/Republican party's challenge with gendery equality and LGBT rights down to the white, rich patriarchal majority's trouble understanding the concept of consent. Marriage equality and contraception are not "slippery slopes," so just stop it.

Then we get to it: I like this pope. I said it. No, he isn't perfect. Please reread the previous paragraph about moral ambiguity. I wrote about the shift in focus out of the Vatican -- "Oh. My. God." -- and why it matters what he said last week whether you're Catholic or not.

The technical issues out of the WCPT studio (hooray, phone line fun!) meant Hal and I couldn't hear each other for much of the segment. Hang with us and stay tuned -- I'll be in Chicago to broadcast live and in person coming up!

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- No War With Syria 9/7/13
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

This segment is almost entirely dedicated to the campaign for intervention in Syria. Hal and I discuss how the War Powers Act has changed executive power over the last several administration, President Obama seeking approval for "limited engagement" from Congress and how we both hope for a peaceful, diplomatic solution before any bombs are launched.

There is a great humanitarian need with millions of Syrians having fled their own country. Listen to my activism segment for The Best of the Left Podcast -- No War With Syria and click on the YouTube "About" tab to sign the petitions from Rep. Alan Grayson and CREDO Action urging your legislators to refrain from adding to the bloodshed.

You can get more background on the conflict from two great Majority Report segments: 9/5 Ali Gharib: Syria Action Does Not Have To Mean War and 9/4 Matt Duss: Don’t Attack Syria.

Happy Anniversary and thank you, Todd Akin! Seriously. A year ago today, Hal brought me on because "legitimate rape" was said out loud by a candidate for United States Senate. In this episode, live in studio from NYC, we hit on everything from foreign policy and disaster capitalism to transgender and feminist issues.

I get personal -- Again. Spoiler alert: I'm not heteronormative and it's a part of my identity like being tall, cis, female, white and adopted. it's a descripter of who I am. If you're freaking out, check yourself and leave me out of it. For more info on the non-monogomy and non-conforming behavior subscribe to the fantastic Tristan Taormino's podcast, Sex Out Loud.

Everyone must, must, must read the piece by the amazing Janet Mock on the battle for trans*-inclusive health care and how it affects Chelsea Manning: http://janetmock.com/2013/08/22/chelsea-manning-transgender-healthcare/

ICYMI, here's where you find Naomi Klein's book, The Shock Doctrine. Also, Hal does his recap on Manning, Snowden and whistleblowing in general. (Sidenote: just because I'm on the show doesn't mean we are the same person; this is not the Borg; I have my own opinions. #kthx)

And it's the 50th Anniversary March on Washington -- Jobs and Justice. Read this exerpt via The Nation Magazine on all us misremembering The Dream; which took us to friend of the show, Lee Camp's bit on teaching history that actually happened
