Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- "Shut Up and Know Your Role!" 2013 Break Down (12/28/13)

Happy New Year! Almost…

Hal had me on to break down the year, both the good and the bad. We cited pieces from Robin Marty "Repro Wrap: End of the Year, End of the Clinics" and Media Matters "Know Your Role And Shut Your Mouth: How Conservatives Treated Women in 2013". I also mentioned the extremely important investigative piece by Adele Stan on how there is no longer (if there ever was) a line between "social" conservatives and "economic" conservatives. Her piece Anatomy of the War on Women lays out the Koch brothers, et al and their funneling of money to groups like Americans United for Life.

We also talked about how the Democrats finally got it together and changed the filibuster rules for judicial nominees. If you nodded off, WAKE UP because this is huge. This recent Majority Report segment with Cliff Schecter gives you more if you missed the story or didn't get how important a 90 seat swing in our judiciary is the most important thing to happen in 2013: The Dems Finally Go Nuclear.

Finally, go to Lady Parts Justice to find out how Lizz Winstead and Revolution Messaging are following up the Texas Women Forever telethon. I'll be involved in this campaign to call out awful politicians and register voters ahead of the 2014 midterms. We must -- and can! -- prevent another 2010-style Tea Party victory lap!

Note about the meme/picture selection: I loved everything about NARAL hiring Ilyse Hogue as their president in 2013 even before I had the chance to get to know her a little. She unapologetic about reproductive justice, doesn't parse words and has made the organization simultaneously focused on the bigger picture and the personal narratives that advance issues surrounding abortion care. I couldn't agree more with her quote, delivered in Texas during the special legislative session that catapulted Wendy Davis to national fame. The far right-wing may think they're winning in the short term -- victories that do affect real people's lives. However, they have mobilized women and their allies. They better fasten their seat belts for 2014…

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- MI Dodges Democracy With "Rape Insurance" Bill (12/14/13)

Michigan subverted democracy this past week via "citizen petition" -- a way for 4% of the population to go around a ballot initiative that would never pass and a governor who has vetoed similar legislation already. Why did they do that? To mandate that women must decide in advance if they wanted to have abortion care coverage on their insurance, even in cases of rape and fetal abnormality.

Robin Marty covered it at Care2 -- As Michigan Passes 'Rape Insurance' Bill, One Senator Tells of Her Own Sexual Assault -- and Talking Points Memo covered the democracy head fake -- Michigan Legislature Passes Controversial Abortion Insurance Bill.

Hal and I discussed the broader implications, the fact that Michigan may be alone on the democracy subversion angle, but it certainly isn't alone on the insurance restrictions for abortion care.

And I got a little love for being a co-producer, co-writer, social media director, media promoter, fundraiser for #20 on Policy Mic's 28 Most Iconic Feminist Moments of 2013. Wait'll they get a load of 2014…

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Voters Reject Abortion Restrictions AGAIN (11/23/13)

Hal had me on to recap a very busy week in reproductive justice. And, in case I don't remember to say it often enough, my gratitude for his insistence that these issues are covered on his show continues to grow with every spot.

When abortion restrictions are put to popular vote, they lose. Every time. Full stop. Albuquerque proved it AGAIN. The 20-week ban lost by a ten point margin because of grassroots efforts by pro-choice groups. Hal continues to hammer the point that this chipping away municipality by municipality and clinic by clinic is a concerted, long-term plan by the extreme right-wing. Which is a good chance for me to plug Robin Marty and Jessica Mason Pieklo's book, Crow After Roe that outlines the legislative and court-based effort to overturn Roe v Wade.

Texas is AH-MAZING. The #TexasWomenForever telethon ROCKED with more than $54,000 raised from more than 800 individual donors. The next morning, however Justice Scalia spoke, giving his seal of approval on the admitting privileges provision that shut down 1/3 of the clinics in Texas and threatening to close more doors in the long term. This crisis continues and is about you even if you're in a "safe blue state."

We pause to say, "Fuck you, Rush." Ok, we stayed FCC appropriate, but everybody knows what Hal and I were thinking.

I posit that Rick Perry think's he's god, which was corrected by Hal. Perry thinks he was appointed by god, a much scarier proposition.

And we took a few minutes for the ACA destruction plan uncovered by Talking Points Memo. I'm hearing none of it because I got my first premium bill for the NY state exchange this week which means I am officials ready to go for January 1 and comprehensive coverage! I dare the GOP to try and take it from me. Seriously. Try.

Hal Sparks Radio Prgm — TexasWomenForever (11/09/13)

#TexasWomenForever -- November 18, streaming everywhere!

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can Choose: Online Telethon to Support TX Women

The nation is pulling together for the women of Texas who -- following the lifting of the Fifth Circuit Court stay -- only have abortion access in six of the state's 256 counties.

THIS IS NOT OK! We love Texas -- geography should NOT equal access. So, the amazing, hilarious Lizz Winstead and completely unpredictable, spectacular Sarah Silvermanhave pulled together a last minute telethon with a line-up you won't believe.

Hal was kind enough to let me come on and plug the event, which has gotten more Texas-y, more abortion-y, more funny, more crazy, more surprise guest-y than I built up on the show! I'll be live tweeting from the event account (as well as my own) @TXWomenForever and using the hashtag #TexasWomenForever, so get a group together to watch the livestream (link coming soon to the event page) and join in the conversation!

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Fight Back Texas, take 2 (11/02/13)

Right now, if you are able, Lilith Fund and Stigma Relief need your help assisting those patients traveling great distance at great expense to access reproductive care. Whole Women's Health closed 1/3 of its clinics without notice, calling patients the night before to cancel appointments. Give if you can and spread the word.

Hal and I picked up our conversation from Friday's Stephanie Miller Show segment on Fight Back Texas. ICYMI: Thursday night's Fifth Circuit Court decision on HB2 which effectively shut down 1/3 of the Texas abortion providers effective immediately. Greg Abbott, the Texas State Attorney General -- who gets more and more awful the more you know about him, won his appeal of the stay granted earlier in the week against the TRAP provision requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at area hospitals. Appeals courts in other parts of the country have struck down admitting laws, which means the next step for legal action is the Supreme Court -- where Anthony Kennedy will likely be the deciding vote.

According to TeaFund, there are 254 counties in Texas. As of today, only 6 of them have an abortion provider. The laws will continue to be challenged, but in the meantime this is real people's lives that are being devastated.

Whole Women's Health closed 1/3 of its clinics without notice, calling patients the night before to cancel appointments. Give if you can and spread the word.

I joined Hal Sparks, filling in for Stephanie, to talk about Thursday night's Fifth Circuit Court decision on HB2 which effectively shut down 1/3 of the Texas abortion providers effective immediately. Greg Abbott, the Texas State Attorney General -- who gets more and more awful the more you know about him, won his appeal of the stay granted earlier in the week against the TRAP provision requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at area hospitals. Texas needs us. First, to push back on all the "just let them secede" and "well, of course, it's Texas" sarcasm. The activists there are brave and tireless and spend time on the front lines with little appreciation or recognition. Geography should not dictate access to health, life or Constitutional rights. Also, if you need a thing to affect you directly to get you motivated, this assault on reproductive rights isn't going to stop at the red state borders.

In the segment, I mentioned the book Crow After Roe by Robin Marty and Jessica Mason Pieklo for anyone interested in the extreme right-wing's long term plan on overturning my right to bodily autonomy.

If you want more on the court situation, check out Sam Seder and Cliff Schecter on The Majority Report the morning after the decision.

The Alan Colmes Show --Pushing Back on Right-Wing ACA Hysteria (10/23/13)

Alan Colmes caught Robin Marty's piece in Rolling Stone, Six Stories of Obamacare Already Making a Difference, and had me come on to talk about my experience signing up for the NY state health exchange which lead to me proclaiming: I'm in The Tank For Obamacare!

We discussed the right-wing hysteria over the Affordable Care Act's national exchange website, the difference between the state and national exchanges, which states participated and how the ACA and its health insurance reform provisions have already created real relief for people across the country.

Medicare For All and the next reform is the goal. Alan gives out the info on the current legislators with pending bills and we lament that while the ACA makes strides, there's work to be done.

Alan and I didn't have time to get into details on why the national site is having so many more problems than the state sites. If listening to Congressional panels and investigations makes you yawn and the partisan bickering makes you nuts, Sam Seder and Cliff Schecter dissected what actually happened with the exchange roll out on Friday's Majority Report (which you should already be listening to): The Majority Report, Casual Friday (10/25/13) with Cliff Schecter

I really enjoyed doing the show -- especially chatting with someone who talks as quickly as I do. Alan has invited me back and asked me to write for his website, Liberaland, so look for me soon under the "New Voices" tab.

Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is up on iTunes! Subscribe to never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! There will be a podcast feed for the audio versions of my blog posts coming as well, so stay tuned.

I remain an eternal optimist, if a skeptical one. The poll numbers for the GOP have been drastically dragged down by the tea party intransigence in the House -- to the lowest percentage since polls have been taken on favorability. People are legitimately angry and that anger overshadowed the shaky roll out to the Affordable Care Act. With midterms just a year away and those enrolling in the exchanges about to experience comprehensive health insurance -- some for the first time in their entire lives, I see hope on the horizon.

Hal and I chat crazy vs pragmatism and how IN LOVE I am with Obamacare, how I'm not alone in my excitement as detailed by Robin Marty in Rolling Stone this week, and how the McCutcheon case heard by SCOTUS could rain all over my optimism.

If you're streaming/downloading/tuning in for Hal Sparks, you won't find him here! I took over the hosting seat and the mic on October 6, 2013 to talk GOP shutdown. I stacked the show with my favorite people and let them tackle how the Republican intransigence affects real people. We threw out stats and facts inconvenient to Speaker Boehner and his caucus, mocked the insanity of a Congressional minority demanding something for doing their damn jobs and I took down a ring-wing caller who thought he'd amuse himself by playing "Stump the Fill-in Host."

We had a very heart-felt story from a listener who understands what cuts to the WIC program mean, ridiculous audio provided by Johnny -- in the sidecar as always, and I gave producer Dennis a heart-attack by announcing that the FCC was out of commission due to the shutdown. Check it out, share, subscribe and go follow/read/listen to/enjoy my badass guests!

Guest info:

Robin Marty, reproductive justice warrior! Also, author of Crow After Roe, a book everyone should get, and journalist/encyclopedia of state-level repro health issues, laws and pending legislation.

Michael Brooks, producer and contributor to The Majority Report and host of Intersection at Aslan Media.

Cliff Schecter, progressive media guru, pundit, author, advocate and gracious guest.

Imani Gandy, The Angry Black Lady, host/writer/blogger/recovering lawyer/reproductive rights and intersectional feminist badass.

Dean Obeidallah, comedian and filmmaker of the new documentary The Muslims are Coming!, now rent-able/buy-able on iTunes. Here's his opinion piece, 10% of Americans like Congress: Are they nuts?, we discuss on the show.

Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

Ted Cruz is beyond ridiculous. Hal couldn't resist spending some time on his faux filibuster -- aka fundraising speech -- and I couldn't resist the Seuss moment. You have to hear Cliff Schecter nail the Cruz irony deficiency for "Casual Fridays" on the Majority Report, which I bastardized badly.

Here's the Ted Cruz tweet that makes it clear his staff rivals him in a lack of basic governing lingo: "SCOTUS is what?"

In all seriousness, the House GOP is moving the country toward a governmental shut down so they can continue their temper tantrum. Even if a budget manages to pass, the debt ceiling is right around the corner. Don't forget to thank former representative, now governor, Mike Pence (R-IN) for kicking off the debt ceiling-budget merry-go-round. (My piece on Pence and his cohorts: anti-woman language to the budget they passed at midnight Sunday morning, should give you deja vu. They haven't learned anything from 2012; let's make sure we have.

"Papal Praise" -- Dangerous Conversation, New Media Mondays (09/23/13)
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

I took my papal praise radio tour on Dangerous Conversation for New Media Mondays. We talked about my piece Oh. My. God. on a shift in culture from the Vatican and its possible effect on Americans no matter their religious heritage. Lee Camp got a mention for being in the "I can't believe I'm praising the pope" predictament along with me: What the Pope has Said That's Too Dangerous to Talk About. Ledge is slightly concerned that Lee's MOC may lead to the apocolypse, so watch at your own risk.

Other topics included optimism for LGBT rights, abortion access, contraception mainstreaming, stem cell research normalization, and -- of course -- masturbation. Ledge gets a bit nostalgic about his seed, so this is for him: the bit from John Fugelsang on the history of the church's stance concerning "spilling your seed" and its centuries-long misinterpretation: "Birth Control vs Fake Christians".

We discuss American Catholics and their incorrect rep as a conservative voting block, me telling the story of the Chicago Police Dept captain who didn't appreciate the 14-Foot guilt Jesus across from a clinic where I escorted. (The particular protest that prompted the erection of the Guilt Jesus is returning and it's nationwide. Follow Robin Marty's blog for info on the "40 Days For Life" invasion coming to your community.)

Of course, not everyone is excited about or gets the nuanced change happening in Vatican politics. I fell required to include at least one dissenting voice. From RH Reality Check: "My Short Lived Hope for a More Compassionate Catholic Church"

Moral ambiguity episode! wherein I join Hal and John mid-Ted Cruz discussion. I couldn't resist including the lead-in ahead of my segment because, well, Braveheart reference. Also, Hal boils the Conservative/GOP/Republican party's challenge with gendery equality and LGBT rights down to the white, rich patriarchal majority's trouble understanding the concept of consent. Marriage equality and contraception are not "slippery slopes," so just stop it.

Then we get to it: I like this pope. I said it. No, he isn't perfect. Please reread the previous paragraph about moral ambiguity. I wrote about the shift in focus out of the Vatican -- "Oh. My. God." -- and why it matters what he said last week whether you're Catholic or not.

The technical issues out of the WCPT studio (hooray, phone line fun!) meant Hal and I couldn't hear each other for much of the segment. Hang with us and stay tuned -- I'll be in Chicago to broadcast live and in person coming up!

Happy Anniversary and thank you, Todd Akin! Seriously. A year ago today, Hal brought me on because "legitimate rape" was said out loud by a candidate for United States Senate. In this episode, live in studio from NYC, we hit on everything from foreign policy and disaster capitalism to transgender and feminist issues.

I get personal -- Again. Spoiler alert: I'm not heteronormative and it's a part of my identity like being tall, cis, female, white and adopted. it's a descripter of who I am. Chicago was ground zero in the fight against the encroaching corporatocracy when the 40th anniversary party for the American Legislative Exchange Council descended August 6-9. Hal and I talk the broad coalition protesting which included teachers, fast food workers, students, pilots, parents, occupiers, libertarians, and real -- for real -- conservatives. I get a big angry when discussing activist friends being introduced to the pavement and being arrested despite wielding nothing but camera phones, permits and the First Amendment.

I touch on what ALEC is, how it operates, the whistle blowing that lead to the Center for Media and Democracy's ALEC Exposed project/documentary, and why all those school privatization and Stand Your Ground laws look eerily similar. Spoiler alert: it's not because legislators across the country are telepathic.

It turns out I'm 34, single, female and I enjoy sex. I don't care if that makes Pat Robertson or his friends uncomfortable. In this country, I have a constitutional right to live my life the way I want. I build long-term, affectionate relationships that include physical expression and -- gasp! -- pleasure. I suggest you deal with it. Or, better yet, don't deal with it. Don't worry about. Go find yourself a hobby that doesn't include spying in my bedroom. We'll both be happier.

The North Carolina governor and his condescending cookies are about more than "protecting the unborn" or even regulating my access to birth control. It's rooted in the Puritanical heritage of our patriarchy that can't help itself from telling me what's proper, appropriate, acceptable, or good for me.

Hal and I touch on that as well as the latest in reproductive justice and renaming the "War on Women" to be more inclusive. Writer Lauren Rankin has a piece in Truthout everyone should read: Not Everyone Who Has an Abortion is a Woman. Check your cis privilege -- especially if that sentence makes no sense to you at all.

I also recommend a recent Majority Report interview with Sam Seder and Jodi Jacobson on stigma and the broader background to the anti-choice, anti-sex legislation.

"That's how we learn about each other: we are each other's sandpaper," host Scott Legere.

Iman Gandy -- aka The Angry Black Lady -- and I were back on Dangerous Conversation, this time for New Media Mondays. Our first round with Ledge and his on air team lead to a heated debate on reproductive rights. This time we hit on race, gender, privilege and the way they intersect to shape personal experience and public discourse. As always, there was time for sarcasm, laughter, silliniess and profanity. If honesty and directness aren't your thing, you'll want to skip this 75 minutes. If you want to hear sterotypes challenged and debated, check it out and check back for our next appearance.

Hal gives a great intro on the current wave of anti-choice laws/bills, complete with all the reasons I'm proud to be on air discussing women's rights with him so frequently. We go into the substance of my piece, Dominating Democracy, where I put reproductive rights in the broader context of our larger democracy. Make no mistake, the GOP has no regard for our country's history or process.

Excerpt: "In no place outside your fantasy of a martini greeting at the door with dinner of its way out of the over and your slippers being presented to you by your obedient wife with her perfectly coiffed hair-do does legislating a woman's bodily autonomy exist as a thing that works...So, STOP IT. Women are having none of it. We're screaming and people are paying attention. Very quickly the coalition broadened beyond the predictable organizations and allies. You are infringing on the human rights of your citizenry and you are trampling all over democracy to do it."

I am also including the segment after mine where Hal & John play the entire clip of Sarah Slamen attempting to testify at the Texas statehouse. Also, Hal coins the word "midwiffery" -- pronounced "Mid-whif-hery" -- just before a Monty Python reference so fast you'll almost miss it.

Here's the information on the reporting from Ari Berman on voting rights as published in The Nation. His appearance on The Majority Reportjust after the SCOTUS decision does an amazing job of breaking down the likely outcome and what's already happening in the states formerly covered by Section Five.

You can also find my piece, Dominating Democracy, on Raging Chicken Press.

"Sailor Female" -- Dangerous Conversation, New Media Mondays (05/20/2013)
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

I love doing Dangerous Conversation. Quite simply, it's as much fun to be on as it is to listen. Host Scott Ledger and I agree about half the time and I enjoy both halves. When we disagree, debate is intelligent and constructive -- though often heated and passionate. I have to be caffienated and prepared with my A game.

This particular segment was the roll out for New Media Mondays. Ledge finds dissenting voices imperative to democratic discourse, so he has a regular Monday rotation of writers and radio/podcast hosts who's viewpoints are as varied as their subjects. I was honored to be asked to be a loud, female voice in the crowd. Look for me every six-eight weeks in the 4pmEST hour on RadioIO.

As Kermit Gosnell had just been convicted, we talked a fair amount about the reality of abortion access, my time escorting at women's clinics in Chicago and why prochoice is the real prolife stance. We aren't always this heavy and even with the topic, we always have time for innuendo and silliness. I continue to appreciate how real the show's host and producers are when vacilating between serious and light-hearted. They also never hold back when asking questions from their own perspectives. Ledge discusses a woman in his life terminating a pregnancy and how she felt while asking me about my experience.

And then...the First Amendment. Plenty of time for that every time. On the anniversary of the Chicago NATO conference, I may have had a few words on the police state. In the Venn diagram of liberal--libertarian, there is always common ground in the Constitution.

Oh, and I left in the intro because it's the best I've gotten yet. Glad that my ability to wield profanity is appreciated, almost as much as my speaking my mind with no holding back. I feel the same way about you, gentlemen.

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Talkin' Texas, 6/29/13
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

Rick Perry is just awful. That's not exactly news. TX Senator Wendy Davis standing up to him and his anti-woman cohorts for more than ELEVEN STRAIGHT HOURS, however, is dramatic, comendable news largely ignored by major corporate media. Nearly 200,000 people watched the livestream feed as Davis stood between SB5 -- a bill that would reduce the number of abortion clinics in her state to 5 -- and the women of Texas. When republicans succeeded in shutting her down and democrats ran out of rules or order to back her up, supporters outside the chamber screamed and yelled to run out the clock -- a moment so dramatic it continues to bring tears to my eyes. The Texas Tribune YouTube page has tons of available video, including the last few minutes: as republicans attempted to call the roll despite the noise.

The Texas legislature begins a second expensive (to the tune of a likely $800,000) legislative session to try again. The tireless Jessica Luther has all the information on how you can help from anywhere in the country and will be tweeting from the capitol on Monday, July 1 as legislators return. This fight is about all of us as Ohio lawmakers made clear when they crammed every imaginable abortion restriction they could think of into the budget they passed on Friday. Robin Marty of RH Reality Check has the latest on Ohio where lawsuits will be the only recourse when Gov Kasich signs the budget today.

This is what the GOP is doing in "off" years. They think no one is watching, that no one will see. It is our democratic duty to watch and then to vote when the legislators who seek to eliminate our rights ask us to rehire them. So, tune in and pass it on.

This clip has 100% less me! Wade Davis is too awesome not to share, so here is his interview on HSRP ahead of the Chicago 2013 Pride Parade where he was Grand Marshall.

Davis's badassery extends beyond his high profile advocacy and work changing the public perception of LGBTQ Americans to You Belong, a unique project bringing together queer youth and allies through athletics. "Like" You Belong on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/YBInitiative and find out how you can support this amazing project.

From his You Belong bio:

Wade Davis II is a nationally recognized speaker, advocate, writer and educator. He is a former NFL athlete who teaches at-promise youth how to define success for themselves and to thrive in society. His writings and interviews have appeared in the LA Times, The Huffington Post, New York Times, The Advocate, OutSports, TheGrio.com, and other media.

Also, Wade is a board member of You Can Play and GLSEN's (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Educational Network) Sports advisory board. He was invited to speak at the International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC in 2012 and is currently partnering with the Minority AIDS Institute.

Hal Sparks Radio Prgm -- Fetal Masturbation Leads to 20-week Abortion Ban Segment, 6/22/13
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

"Fetal masturbation" is the newest "reasoning" for limiting women's access to abortion care -- and it's introduced into the national legislative debate by former OBGYN, Rep. Burgess. We have the amazing audio.

The House passes a draconian 20-week abortion ban that hardly gives a passing glance at the woman carring the fetus. Forget "health of the mother," we're in "life of the mother" language and territory, which narrows the allowance to an alarming window of immedicacy. (Seriously, go get Crow After Roe and hear more about why language is important and what the red flags are in legislation.)

I get an online visit from the head of the "ProLife" Action League who stops by my blog personally to imply that the PLAL is thrilled with me and that I should "Keep On Talking!"

And, finally, Hal and I discuss why pro-choice, pro-woman advocates/activists feel such kinship with the LGBTQ movement: it's the same assholes who find us all threatening. Hal's description of what causes that and the long human rights struggles resulting from patriarchal discomfort are can't-miss!

That's it. Hal and I have both had enough of the "You fed us the apple, you are intrinsically less-than" nonsense GOP legislators aren't even bothering to dance around anymore. What happened to all that "outreach training?" We take on the 20-week ban that passed the House judiciary committee (I still don't know what the hell they're doing discussing abortion), the all-out assault on women's access to reproductive care and a reminder from Hal that it isn't stopping at abortion. Santorum wasn't an anomoly, ladies, they're after your birth control.

Then I make my pitch for restriction-free abortion care. We trust our medical community through groups like the American Medical Association to dictate ethical practices on everything from organ transplantation to prescription writing. Why does abortion need a special set of laws to tell doctors what is appropriate for their patients? (Spoiler alert: it's not about protecting women, it's about controlling them.)

Hal Sparks Radio Prgm -- I'm officially a feminist menace segment, 6/8/13
Announcement! The Katie Speak Live Archives feed is now on iTunes! Subscribe at Katie Speak Live and never miss my spots with Hal, Ledge and others! (Android/PC compatible versions will always be available at my blog under the "Katie Speak Live!" tab.)

Hal and I discuss my new position as thorn-in-the-side of the "Pro-Life" Action League who flipped out over my Picketers vs Patients piece. We take the time to give Allen West what he deserves over his snide comments concerning rape in the military, including the history behind conflating the issue of female sexuality with genocide. (Not kidding...)

And I get slightly loud and angry over the possiblity that the Anonymous member who passed on PUBLICLY AVAILABLE social media posts in order to get the Stubenville rapists prosecuted may serve more than 5x the jail sentence as the actual rapists.

I give mention to a badass new book, Crow After Roe which everyone who cares about women's access to care should go get immediately. Show the authors, Robin Marty and Jessica Mason Pieklo some appreciation; they're both awesome Twitter follows!

Hal Sparks Radio Pgm -- Louie Gohmert needs to stop talking segment, 5/25/13

...wherein Hal and John discuss women's reproductive rights in front of -- but not with -- me. They were taking their cues from Congress, where the all male, all rich, all white GOP panel parade continues in an effort to elminate my bodily autonomy. I continue to take it personally. I explain why Louie Gohmert can't have it both ways, using technology to detect a heart beat and therefore necessitate banning abortions post-20-weeks while proclaiming that a woman carrying a non-viable fetus detected by similar technology should "wait...and see."

We also discuss what "strict constitutionalist" actually mean. Spoiler alert: it means anti-every-who-isn't-a-white-male-landholder.

I call for the marginalizing of women's clinic picketers, to turning them into the next Westboro Baptist Church -- mocked and deserving of our communal scorn. The discussion resulted in my Picketers vs Patients piece which has garnered much attention from the "Pro-Life" Action League.
